Exclamation New 7 month old male, questions:

Hello everyone,
This is my first post so I guess Iíll introduce myself as owning two five-year old cockatiels and a conure who I just got

So I bring him home two nights ago and we didnít get home until about 930 at night. I had his temporary cage for the quarantine all set up so I let him venture freely into it and he seemed to find his food and water alright and started playing with his toys.

Heís on a diet of the Zupreme fruit pellet mix, Lafeber s 50% pellet 50% seed avi cakes, and i offer different greens and fruits mixed in.

Yesterday he was still pretty shy and not doing much but eating and drinking and watching me. He got to the point where I was able to give him scritches and he came out and explored a bit (pic below of him being a ninja).

I noticed last night he didnít sleep much, I would wake up at different points to him walking around the cage. Itís covered and thereís not much sound.

Is that normal? He also seems a bit tired today because of it and is leaning against his cozy hut dozing off. Still eating and drinking though.

Just wanting to make sure this is all normal. He had a vet checkup three months ago from what I was last told and everything was normal (have the papers and everything).

Thanks in advance

Re: New 7 month old male, questions:

First of all, hello to you and welcome!! Love the pics.

It has only been two nights as you say and some birds will take time to adjust to their new home, environment and routine. Keeping him on a routine (uncover cage at such and such time, out of cage play time, back in for evening, etc.) is a good way to show him what he can expect on a daily basis. Don't forget you can offer him a variety of veggies, including peppers, corn, peas, green beans, etc but they do seem to have a favorite!

I would just keep an eye on him and continue to let him adjust to the new schedule and routine. Go at his pace in terms of handling (don't make him do anything he doesn't want to do) and continue to offer him treats, and make every interaction positive.

Also, here's a helpful thread in terms of help you -- Tips for Bonding and Building trust....good luck!

Re: New 7 month old male, questions:

Ditch that Cozy Hut NOW. So many pet parrots have died, either ingesting the material or getting strangled from a thread from those. Give him a small box with 3 sides taken off if he needs someplace to hide while sleeping, and he can just chew that up.
