Conures Fighting?!

Hello, me and my sister both have Green Cheek Conures. My conure is 5 months old and her's is 2 months old. We let them both out of the cage together for the first time and something I didn't expect happened, they began fighting? My bird, Kiwi, began biting my sister's bird and tried to pull out his feathers. He also put his talons on my sister's bird's head and began biting his head and eyes. They both are male birds by the way, if that helps at all. If you have any ideas on why they might be fighting please tell me!

There could be a number of reasons why they're fighting.

1. They were not properly introduced - they should both have separate, large cages, next to each other so they can get to know each other without contact.

2. Your bird may have felt threatened by the new bird - some birds will get along with every bird and are curious about a newcomer while others may feel territorial and aggressive towards the newcomer.

3. Your bird may just hate other birds - it is not uncommon for birds to react negatively to other birds. Some simply have had a bad experience in the past and will then choose to defend themselves furiously if they encounter another bird.


Ways to get around this....
-put their cages next to each other but don't allow direct contact for the time-being.
-introduction should be in a neutral environment (not around one's cage) where both birds can be pulled away if necessary should fighting arise.
-encourage interaction by sharing treats with them. Make every interaction between the two a positive one.

Glad there wasn't any serious injuries! Yes do take some time to introduce them... well I mean again. Truth be told they may never get along but only time will tell. These little critters have so many deep instincts hard to put a nail on the trigger. On the plus side they have a flocking instinct so if that kicks in later when they mature a little they can end up BFFs Best of luck and do be careful!

yes always take time to introduce, never allow them out and see what happens. Take time with cages next to each other. Also they should not be introduced to each other until they have been owned for 30 days in case one or the other has a bug they can pass on.

also remember that birds are fiercely territorial, if an intruder they do not like enters their area they will attack, always introduce on neutral ground so neither have a claim to the area

Also be careful to not let one hang on the cage of the other. If the occupant is upset, the visitor will lose a toe!

Once I adopted another GCC hoping that they could be friends with my hydutt but it did not turn out that way. Although I kept them in separate cages for almost a month, they never got used to of each other. Whenever I let them out at the same time, they would fight (like real fight to kill each other). Thank god I was always watching them and nothing serious happened (except them drawing blood from my fingers while I was trying to split them to stop their fight). But I ended up with giving up him to a house where he would always be the only bird. My GCC (hydutt) is currently living with a budgie who is 1/3 of his size So, some birds do well with other birds (even if they are tiny) some don't. Just be careful, they may harm each other seriously or even kill.
