I've decided... He's gotta have a better life.

Last year I made a post. I asked wether or not I should get a sun conure from our local pet shop. Many, intelligently, said no. They were right. Being a stupid, ignorant, overly excited teen, I didn't listen and just got him anyways. This was in the summer. Great progress, I saw him since hatching and took him home beginning of summer. Being off of school and no work yet, I had plenty time to spend with him. We bonded, and I taught him how to wave and high five, potty trained. Fast forward to the start of school, things pick up. Not bad, just more hours away, so I got more toys. Fast forward some more and I get a job, I need to start saving for college. Less and less time comes and I'm just exhausted when I AM home. That's now... I can't continue like this. He needs, no, DESERVES better. I have never had such a companionship. But he's taught me so many lessons... All life has value, and that sometimes, things are too much to handle despite how prepared you may be.

So... That's that... I sob both tears of immense sadness and joy now. He will find a good and permanent home, I will make absolute sure of it. Later in life, I'll try again. I'll take in another bird in need of a better home and use Sammy as my example... He will help a future precious, I swear on it.

To everyone here, well, I'm sorry. I'm doing what many shouldn't, sending him away from his home. This is absolutely completely my fault. But thank you, thank you all... I will still linger on here. I still have Skye and Cloud, my budgies. I want to start there.

To those of you who want a bird and think you're prepared... please, please think more. Don't be me.

You're my best friend, Sammy... you've changed my life, it's time for me to change yours.

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
I'm very sorry it came to this, a far different ending than you envisioned. But I applaud your insight and commitment to finding Sammy a great home.

Geeze Im so sorry you both are going thru this. Great that you realize just how much attention your feathered youngin deserves. It may be of little comfort but lemme say I got lucky and took in a lil sun conure from another home. He adjusted quickly in his new surroundings in days not weeks.. at from that point forward was the center of attention. So rest assured your lil one will be resilient and do just fine in his new home... and like you... he changed my life forever. Wish my best to both of you.

Good for you, admitting that the parrot is better off with a different family. Takes guts and compassion.

Yes, please stick around and get involved. Especially when there are posts from people in the position you were. Hearing from someone with real experience might just make a difference.

It's a tough decision, but made for all the right reasons.

Most people aren't brave enough to admit they've made a mistake, especially in public and especially on a forum where you were advised not to get another bird. It's commendable.

Sounds like you have given Sammy a great start in life, he knows love and kindness and that people are good. He'll be starting the next part of his life happy, healthy and confident. Not sure any of us could do better than that!

It takes courage to admit a mistake, and to try to correct it! You have discovered a softer side of yourself and what amazing creatures these feathered companions are!

My JoJo was given up by a loving woman, that because of a horribly stressful situation, he had plucked every feather he could reach. To save him, she had to give him up!
He spent a year in the rescue(feed and grain store), hating everyone and everything, growing back feathers! On a Kaytee sunflower seed mix diet!
10/14, I walked in to see the new owners and discovered their small rescue effort(3-4ish bird’s). Said hello to the sad little GCC and left.
Brought my daughter in to meet him, and he jumped up on her and then over to me, my photo is from that day! Daughter returned a few days later, same thing! We knew nothing of his history, and didn’t know the staff felt a miracle had just happened!
Adjustment period? The night he came into my house, he sat on my shoulder while I assembled his cage and immediately started eating pellets! It only got better from there!

This story is twofold, to give you support in your decision, this is for Sammy, and someday you may walk into that feed and grain store and have your life flipped! I had refused to bring a bird back into my life for many years!

Good for you for learning this ‘life lesson’, owning it and growing from it.
Your actions are very clear of how much you love Sammy.
You should be proud that you are doing what’s in Sammy’s best interest.

Based on this, I believe you will do very well in life. Someday, when you are ready you will have another companion bird.

Best of luck to you both.

GlitchTown, have you found a new home or rescue organization for Sammy already?
I don't know where you live but, if you are close enough to the Richmond, VA area, my husband I would love to be considered for Sammy's new home.

We adopted a 13 year old female Blue Crown Conure about 7 months ago who adores me but is very fickle with my husband. He had a Sun several years ago and was devastated when he died suddenly and inexplicably.

We are "older" with steady 8-5, Monday-Friday jobs and a "boring" enough lifestyle to keep any feathered baby happy.
Just throwing it out there because you just never know until you ask........

We haven't found anyone yet... But, I live in New York. You sound like a great parront and i think Sammy would be very happy... I'm having a lot of trouble finding a good home for Sam around here :( although we only live 6 hrs away, and id want Sam to go to the best possible home! Maybe we can figure something out.

GlitchTown, if you are good with giving us his cage and supplies, we could meet you halfway somewhere.
I can assure you Sammy will be very well loved and you can check up on him anytime you want via Facebook or private message. I post tons of pictures, videos and updates of my Connie so I'm sure it will be even "worse" if we are able to have the honor of having Sammy join our family.
Please feel free to message me so we can exchange info and discuss the potential logistics and all of your concerns.

Please remove your email address as seen above. This to assure you some level of safe guard in this World! It may even be better for you to PM her.

Sorry, she will have to PM you, since you are a Junior Member, again sorry, missed that point!

Thank you Sailboat. I did not know there was an option for that. Private message sent and original message edited.

I had missed that you are a Junior Member and that until you become 'Member' status, you cannot send a Private Message (PM). This is a method to protect the membership from spammers and the alike from joining and than PM'ing advertisement, and other junk!

Sad, the things that are needed in this Modern World!?!.

If your PM in blocked, please PM a Super Moderator (SM) and they will set-up the connection for you! NOTE: SM's 'Names' are Purple in color. If you have a problem, Post again, and I or another member will help!

Gonna need that help, please, because I'm "forum challenged" LOL - I've looked around on my own and can't figure out how to find a super moderator.

Okay, no problem! I have PM'ed Anansi and copied both you and GlitchTown regarding your need to make contact!

I know that he will PM you shortly to help you.

To find your PM's: See the upper right hand corner of this page (or near any other page when you are logged in! You will see: Welcome Conniesmommy and below that you will see Private Messages: Chick on Private Massage and it will take you to your incoming messages. You will see my Message to Anansi.

Sorry, I missed giving you a clue on how to find the SM's!

At this point, a quick way would be to click on Private Messages and when once on the received PM page, see the far left side and look down that listing to 'send a message,' Click on that and the area to the right will change to allow you to send a message. Enter: Anansi ; (BOLD not required) at the top and then fill in the title. example: need help to contact GlitchTown.

Below that in the Message section, provide a brief message of what you are trying to do! There are other ways, but this will get you there for now!

I think it is incredibly brave that you have decided to find Sammy a new home, your post, and your love for him touched my heart.

I forwarded the message mentioned above to you, and I wish you the best of luck.

I'm so happy to hear that Sammy will be going to a loving forever home! And GlitchTown, I want to commend you for loving your bird enough to let him go. When the time is right for you, I know you'll make a great parront.

Btw, Steven (SailBoat), you continually go above and beyond for your fellow members. Your efforts are greatly appreciated.
