Meet Cheddar the Nanday

So, I don't like getting my birds from petco but I continue to go and fall in love with their birds. I picked up cheddar (they named him cheddar because of the cute baby chatter he/she makes). Because I don't know the sex from here on out I will refer as "him." I always end up with health issues with parrots from petco but this guy needed a home and He was half off cause he has been there awhile. They moved him from the showroom into their wellness center for awhile as he is VERY picky with food and lost way too weight. He has been gaining it back and is at 96 grams now. He's so sweet, wants only to be cuddled up in my neck. He doesn't bite, makes cute baby noises constantly even though he is 8 months old. I think maybe he was weaned too early or maybe had a traumatic moment cause he is just so dang timid, but entirely trusting. He perches in the cage but does not seem to perch on my hand. it's cute how he sits in my hand. so he was $250 and hatch date was 4/1/17. I'm working my way up to the larger birds he is by far the biggest I've owned. He wont wander far from my shoulder but is showing signs of curiosity of the world. I'm so stoked to add him to my flock.

Yea I couldn't believe how well behaved he is! And sweet. He does need to gain about 40 grams though....

Congratulations! He's a beautiful bird that probably got a rough start in life. Kudos for adopting him. Was he under the care of a certified avian vet or are you planning to take him for a well check? Hopefully you can address the picky food issues and encourage him to a normal weight!

he was under the care of an avian vet. They did all the tests they could think of and all came back healthy. They were just having a hard time getting him to eat but he seems to be eating just fine now. I'll keep watching his weight to make sure of it.

Aww that’s great! He looks sweet. I have a nanday/sun cross of an undetermined age. Although the vet says he’s healthy he’s considered underweight at 114 g. Hopefully Cheddar’s appetite will improve when he’s in a good home with good food!

OMG your hybrid is so beautiful! I love that where the nanday would have a black head yours is maroon! Wow great mixture of colors! I had read that nandays could breed with suns and jendays but I hadn't seen any pics. I totally stalked your photo album lol.

Yea I would imagine your baby should be about the same weight as a nanday so the internets says should be around 140grams. Cheddar is eating like a champ so I have little worries he won't gain it back.

Here's a video of his first time eating with the crew. Many new things and he tried it all I was so proud! He loves apple he sat there and ate almost all of it!

I normally don't like adopting from pet stores either, but after doing mass amounts of research and decided that green cheeks were best fit for me. I tried so hard so find a breeder near me but the closest breeders, they would have to ship them on an airplane and I didn't feel okay with that. My Petco seems to be pretty good with taking care of their pets though, the cages always look clean, food & water is always filled. They handed me the vet papers to show that she was healthy so I took a chance and made her part of my family, and happy that I did.

Pet stores buy from the same independent breeders, they make all their money on the food, cages, treats, toys, grooming, training, all the aftermarket stuff. They don't make a profit if they don't sell a hardy animal.

And no I don't work for one I am an electrical tech/engineer, but there is no problem in buying a pet store bird other than the stigma, you might get a 5% markup for the care they put into before the sale or the isolation period being separated before the sale.

But pet stores, even chain pet stores aren't the devil, they WANT to sell the healthiest pet they can so they can rake in the cash for decades as you treat your pet. And I can respect that.
