Dallas the Black Capped Conure
Hello, I'm new to this forum and to owning birds, and recently I have been searching for the perfect conure for my lifestyle. I have read up a lot on conures and know very much about them now, but I am having trouble deciding between three birds I have met. The first two are a Fancy Green Cheek and a Black Capped. The Green Cheek is very friendly but somewhat shy. It showed a lot of interest in me and even rolled over in its cage and let me pet its belly, which I'm guessing is unusual for a conure. It seemed very shy though and gave one of the store's workers trouble when they tried to get it to step up onto their finger to take it out, instead deciding to flap away from him. When she was out she was scared but allowed me to pet her back. The Black Capped is outgoing and seems a tad mischievous. It immediately stepped onto the worker's finger and came out of the cage. After it stepped onto my finger, it climbed all up and down my arm. It wouldn't allow the worker to close the cage door when it was put back and wanted to continue playing. The third conure is a Peach Front who is only a few months old. It was timid at first but then allowed itself to be petted and desperately wanted to sit on shoulders.

Believe it or not, I am most attracted to the first bird I mentioned who is shy, but I'm not sure if it will be ok with me, so I'd like to know which bird sounds best for a home with constant noise.

I have six conures. I don't have any of these but I have owned GCC's. They are a bit nippy. So expect to get bit until he learns not to bite. HINT: when he bites your finger do not react with "ouch!" Instead, push toward him with your finger kind of knocking him off balance a little and before long he will understand that it doesn't bother you and he'll stop. If you yell "ouch" then he knows he can get a reaction and will continue biting. And no its not unusual for them to turn upside down and lay in your hand. They do this quite a bit as babies. I've heard that black caps are very laid back birds and easy to deal with as well as peach fronts but have not ever owned either.

GCC's are very funny and love to play. They like to hang upside down and are very mischievous. I loved mine, he was a fancy GCC. Very beautiful and so playful. I could do anything with him. He is probably trying to get away because the employees haven't spent a lot of time with him. He will come around and not be scared of you in time. Just teach him the "step up" command by having him step from one index finger to the next on each hand repeating "step up" each time. GCC's are fast learners and will learn the command pretty quickly. If you have any questions feel free to pm me and I'll help as much as I can.

I'm hoping to pick him or her up tomorrow or Friday. How long does it usually take a conure to warm up to a new home?

it really all depends on the bird for how long it'll take. from what i've read, it could be anywhere from a week to a month to whenever, but sometimes way less. i picked my little guy up this morning and already he is falling asleep on my shoulder cuddled up to my ear. but he still is a little nippy as others have said...he usually doesn't bite and more just preens, but sometimes he bites a little harder. i just tell him no and move his beak away when he does this. he's starting to get it i think. he's a very smart bird

by the way, from what you've said, the black capped definitely seems the most friendly, but they all sound like they'd be very good birds. you go with whichever your heart tells you to get and just work with the bird, slowly if it's shy. none of them would be a wrong pick, whoever you choose will bond to you and love you forever :]

I guess it would take the shy Green Cheek longer to warm up. And yeah, the Black Capped seemed very friendly, and funny!

but if you want the green cheek, then don't let how long it might take him to get used to you affect your choice. any bird is going to get a little scrambled and scared when you get him, because you're taking him from where he's lived to a new place, so it's going to shake him up a little. my freddy was shy the first time i met him out of his cage, too [just sort of sat in my hand and let me pet him, and didn't "step up" onto the associate's hand], but he's doing really well already. so if you like the green cheek, get him :] just be sure to get pics up so we can find out for you what kind of green cheek he is ;] ["fancy" green cheek just means that it is one of the green cheek mutations, it seems like many pet stores either don't know the mutations or just choose to use a generic name for all of them. mine was labled fancy green cheek, he is a cinnamon mutation, which basically is a regular green cheek which cannot produce the black/grey pigment, so the colors are a little lighter and his head is a taupe/beige rather than the dark color the regular GCs are]

This Green Cheek is a darker color. I think I'm going to visit it again and see if seeing me more will allow it to warm up to me.

Do Black Caps usually hate their cages, or can that be trained out of them?

i'm not entirely sure what you mean...my freddie doesn't like going back in his cage, but in my opinion that is a good thing, because it means he likes being out and being around me. conures need lots of "out" time each day... but i'm sure eventually your guy understand when it's play time and when it's time to go back and he will put up less of a fuss. just make sure he has plenty of safe toys so that he's not bored when he's in his cage

Alright! I've gotten my Conure! I chose the Black Capped. When I visited him again he was the sweetest out of all three. He cuddled up on my shoulder and wanted to keep playing. After a lot of thought I chose him because he seemed the happiest out of all three. He's taking a nap on top of his cage right now, but when he's done, I'll be sure to snap some pictures of him. He already seems happy with his new home. :D
