Which water cup do you use?

I was wondering if you guys can give me some suggestions on which water cup to use for my GCC&Budgie(they live together in the same cage). Please tell me if you are currently using a water cup that is easy to clean throughly and not too open for my GCC to take baths-bc he is capable of taking baths even when he sees water spilled on the floor.

Re: Which water cup do you use?

I use stainless steel because they are easier to clean. Plastic ones can cause bacteria growth and are harder to scrub. I do have one plastic bird bath in Bluebell’s cage, though, but she also has a stainless steel water bowl that she uses more often. The stainless steel cups would allow your GCC to take a bath however, but I see nothing wrong with that. My GCC takes baths even in the other birds’ bowls! His bath time is when I take all the water bowls out of their cages and take them to the sink to wash and refill them. He never takes baths inside his cage for some reason.

Re: Which water cup do you use?

I got one of those stainless steel cups but Hydutt takes bath in it. I don't know why but I think it would cause bacterial growth and he would eventually get sick(This is what I think). That's why I am using water cups with small openings but I have to change them too often bc they cannot be cleaned easily.

Re: Which water cup do you use?

Stainless steel all the way. Easy to clean, safe, and the birds cant destroy it. As far as the bathing I have to change the water several times a day because of all the junk Mushka puts in her bowl. Food, toys, shredding, herself the list goes on.

Stainless for sure! You must change it if someone takes a bath in it!

Re: Which water cup do you use?

Stainless steel, food and water bowls. The water bottles , like you would have with hamsters, is difficult to throroughly clean - bacteria can be in the long tube. If you have a sterilizer or can boil it they are OK, clean with a thinbottle brust too, to dislodge any slime or crud build up. Plastic are ok if you bird doent chew on them.

Rule of thumb with water - if you wouldnt drink it, your parrot shouldn;t have to. We change Salty's 2 x a day, but he doesn't bath often in it and rarely dunks his food in it.

As a point of interest, in nature, some parrots prefer to bath in wet leaves! Like rolling around on wet Saran wrap.

If your GCC anything like our GCCs Petey and Baby, they splash water EVERYWHERE when they bathe. The water level in their water dishes goes down significantly, far more than they could ever drink.

Re: Which water cup do you use?

Stainless steel is best. We have several so there is always a clean one available. They can go in the dishwasher, you can soak them in bleach (an ounce of bleach in a quart of water is plenty), best of all they don’t break and don’t get micro-scratches. The scratches are great hiding spots for germs and very hard to disinfect.

I gave Gus a drink once out of a clear acrylic goblet. You would not believe the gunk in the water afterwards! Just stuff washing off his beak ... the water was cloudy right away. I don’t think I would have noticed it in an opaque bowl. So we change his water often, even if it looks clean from a distance.
