how to get her out

crazy mango. she is such a funny bird and luvs to play inside of her cage, and have u sit by her and just be in her presence...she luvs her food and treats, which im working on her taking them from my palm.

my problem is, i have a conure that doesnt like to come out to play lol. her cage door is open all day long incase she wants to come out. only maybe 3 times shes actually jumped out, but always races to get back into her cage. she has a playgym built in on the top of her cage, and when she climbs back up the cage to get in, but misses and ends up in there, she doesnt like it. there are toys up there, a swing and a nice perch, but she doesnt want anything to do with it. she will climb down the back of the cage trying to shove herself through the bars to get to her favorite perch inside.

ive been cleaning the bottom tray and grate, but i would like to scrub off her whole cage (it has cranberry juice splattered all over) but she just wont come out lol and i dont want to force her out with a towel. shes happy go lucky as ever inside her cage but even with her favorite treat on my couch armrest and her ladder connecting to it, she wont come out.

when she hops out of the cage she generally does it when we walk out of the room, and i suspect its cuz she wants to come with us, but if she would just figure out that she can follow us if she comes out then i wouldnt have a problem lol. i cant even get onto a perch to come out, she always grabs onto another to stay in.

she is surprisingly a happy and content bird in there, but she has no idea of the potential fun she can have on the outside. and i cant get her to take a bath either

I'd suggest removing the playgym if at all possible. As if she is afraid of it and it's the 1st thing she sees when leaving her cage it makes sense for her to hide

If that fails try sitting with the door open and sitting on a chair etc right infront of the door
hold out a treat and have her come to you to get it
even
if she goes straight back to cage after just keep repeating this process once she will stay with you for the treat start moving your chair back little by little
before you know it shell be dying to come out

Have you tried misting her with a spray bottle
both my birds hate it every other way
remember keep your water warm also

yes the playgym is removeable. infact maybe i can take it off and put it on something else so when she starts to come out i can take her over there to play and its not associated with her cage...hmmm good idea!

shortly after i started this thread i tried the treats from my palm again..she was totally craving her nutriberry but was a bit shy to come get it. i kept my hand just shy of her perch so she would have to either stretch really far or climb onto my hand for it. she tried reaching was able to get one...then for the 2nd one she actually tasted my finger first and then took the treat...the 3rd time she gave my finger a much harder taste lol and then got her treat. she left me a lil dent in my finger but she was trying to gauge exactly how soft it was to see if it was stable i bet. ill try this everyday as her only means of getting a treat to get her onto my hand eventually.

u can just so tell that she wants to cuddle and be luved on but she doesnt have the confidence yet.

as for a spray bottle, i have yet to find one for some reason. i put a dish on the bottom of her cage and put some cranberries in it to get her intrest up...she'll come down to the bottom and even tripped and fell in once lol but has yet to go in it for fun. i put my hand in and splash around in it too to show her its fun and she watches..but it hasnt been enough yet.

she finally came out today

we are going on vacation and need to make everything more accessable for my pet sitter, so we did a little rearranging. the budgie cage is now in the living room with mango, and mangos cage was moved from out of the corner a little. i still needed to clean her cage so ive been waiting for her to come out again. she was so curious about those budgies singing she hopped right out of her cage and hung out underneath it. she usually clammers to get back in as quick as possible but she was very mellow and actually enjoying it. i took the built in play gym off of the cage and put it on the floor by her, she wanted to investigate right away. i put her food and water in the holders and took out her favorite toy and put it on there. while she was exploring i was able to take the cage outside and thoroughly hose it down.

since its cold out now it took a lil while to dry, so she had plenty of out of cage time. she is a lil bugger though and was chewing on my wicker vase and went under the couch a few times. toward the end when the cage was dry and i was putting everything back in for her, she started to venture out even further and came close to my toes, even close to my son when he wasnt looking i put her ladder down to the floor for her after about an hour of play and she came back in and rested. she was able to flap her wings and stretch them out for a good while, but never made it over to the budgie cage to visit.

theyll all sing to eachother all day while we are gone for the week, and ill have classical music on for them 24/7 i will miss them but they wont be lonely with each others company.

O yay that is great news before you know it shell be destroying the house and you'll be wishing she had never come out lol

It's amazing what simple changes we can make for our birds and how big if an impact it can have on their attitude and behaviour
