Green Cheek Conure
Hello! So recently my boyfriend and I have been getting some new noises out of Zelda (our GCC), and trying to figure out what they mean. One noise in particular that she’s done since we got her a few weeks ago is the low “quacking” noise. She does it all the time.

I decided to look it up to see what it meant, and apparently they do it when they’re in “mild distress”, which concerns me considering how much she does it.

I’m just wondering if there’s any other meaning behind the noise? She does it when she’s fluffed up, when she’s sleeping, when she’s with me, when she’s not with me, etc... Basically, like I said before, all the time. So it’s hard to believe she’s always in mild distress.

Thoughts? :gcc:

Rio (Yellow sided conure) sadly no longer with us
my conure quacked all the time, if he was interested in something, if I appeared through the door, morning wake ups, playing with a toy, dancing to music. Most activities involved a bit of quacking

Yes, that's what she does too! If she sees something new or if I come in the room, she'll do it. It's like an "eh. eh. eh" quacking noise Lol

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...

When we were living near a pond, the Rb imitated the mallard colony there...
That was ten years ago and he has stopped.

My black capped conure does this. but none of my other conures. he seems to do it when I take him out of his normal routine like taking him to my shop or the store. It's cute. I think it is out of interest or excitement. He doesn't do it when distressed.

My sun and GCC both quack lots, mostly when they are happy, excited, chatty....okay let’s just say it’s most of the time :)

Kermit, ♀ GCC (Green Demon)
I read that too, but like many people here I don't think that's true. My Kermit does it usually when I'm doing something that's interesting to her, or she sees something unusual/interesting. It's more like a cluck than a quack, I suppose. I translate it more to like "what? what's this?"

Kermit does have another somewhat similar noise that does translate to mild distress, but with more spacing than her contented clucking. Mild distress would be accompanied by body language, like the feathers flat against the body and sticking their neck out very tall as they look around the room. If you don't see that, then chances are your conure isn't stressed out.

Which is to say, sources online are a loose approximation and you'll learn their language with enough time and patience ;)

My Kyo makes a growly noise when she's distressed and quacks when she is intrigued by something. But she barely makes conure noises now, she talks people talk more.

Yoda quacks very frequently, but he always seems quite happy when he's doing it... so I just quack back at him and we have little quacking conversations. :) Sometimes he makes noises that sound a bit like an Oink, sometimes he makes little panting noises that sound like he is imitating the sound of our laughter. My favorite sound is when he is REALLY happy he makes little purring noises.

It seems to me when he is distressed, it's obvious. His cries are loud and/or tortured sounding when he's in his cage and I don't come let him out right away, or a loud squawk when he gets startled. Or a sad little peep peep sound when he is very sleepy or lonely.

I hope I haven't mistaken any of his sounds, thinking they were cute happy noises when they were signs of distress. It's hard to belive he's in distress every time he quacks though, or that would mean he is distressed anytime he's roaming around his playgym exploring and climbing. ;)
