Hey! Not sure if anyone reading this will have seen my previous post about Momo but we're making loads of progress with bonding and training! Momo still doesn't show much interest in treats (eats well but just drops treats I hand to them) but they're responding well to verbal praise and cuddles :) Momo is such a little cuddle bug :) We've also been working on step-up training and it's going surprisingly well, Momo definitely knows what I want when I ask them to step up and does what I ask probably about 80% of the time haha. They also like to jump up to my arm and climb to my shoulder instead of staying on my hand but they seem to be getting much more comfortable staying on my hand. Any tips would be great!

I'm wondering about introducing Momo to my budgie, Piper. They've known each other for about 2 months now and they have cages right next to each other. They seem to absolutely love each other, groom each other, become distressed when separated etc. so I'm wondering if it would be safe to allow them to interact? And if so what are some suggestions you have to make it as safe as possible?

Congrats on the progress, it sounds like you’re doing great! It sounds like you’ve been observing how they interact with each other through cages and all indicators have been positive. The things that I would consider when letting them out together would be - choosing neutral ground for the interaction (not one of their cages), having toys and other stuff for them to do separately while they are out together, having treats or something desirable on hand to use as a distraction tool, and very close supervision to be able to separate if there’s any behaviour that is concerning. I’m sure others will add some tips! Hope you’ll update how it goes :)

Supervise them as stated above and see how they go. Make good things happen when they are out together. Give them treats or something nice to eat. Special things when they are together so they learn that being together is a good thing and good things will happen. Its just training really.

Good job on the step up training. Mine always steps up then often will end up on the arm or shoulder. Its all positive, well done. I would try and find a treat for the Conure though if you plan on trick training but if he is feeling rewarded by praise then just keep doing that.

I will lightly place my thumb over Xanders feet if I want him to stay on my hand and not go on the arm. This took some training just getting him used to having his feet touched. Some Parrots hate it though and will never let you touch their feet but while your step up training just lightly place your thumb over a foot for a quick second and then remove it. Next time leave it a little longer before you remove it. You get what I'm saying. Then eventually you can add more pressure but just enough so the Parrot cant move its foot. This helps in moving your Parrot around the house or in and out of cage if he/she wont go in just of your hand normally stepped up and can make things a little easier.

Sounds like your doing everything right, good Parronting my friend x

Sounding good!
Trust but verify!
And keep us posted.
Some photos or videos would be wonderful. You certainly have two of the greatest species in the world. Lots of parrot in small packages!

Thanks guys! I have actually been starting to train a toe hold actually! Momo doesn't love it but is used to being handled so accepts it for a second or two!

I had the two birds out together yesterday but they weren't too close to each other because Momo was with me and Piper is still nervous around me and perched quite high.

I'll see if I can find some cute pictures for you guys! The link in my post is to a photo of the two of them near each other on my blog! Heaps of pictures go there! I have one of them right after they moved into adjacent cages and sat right next to each other

Oh and here's one of where they usually hang out together. They groom each other through the cage (closely supervised)

We've been working on the two birds hanging out and it's going super well! Thanks for all of the advise!
