Safe diffused essential natural oils ?

I’ve been reading about using a electronic diffuser and natural essential oils and is it safe for birds. I’ve read that they are but want some feedback. My wife misses the candles and I’m looking for a replacement and safe way to scent up the home.
Any thoughts or ideas ?

I know that mint oils should be avoided as they can irritate the respiratory tract. Citrus oils are usually considered safe and pleasant smelling, as do oils from flowers. Be sure you are getting 100% essential oils and NOT fragrance oils. Essential oils will cost more and come in small glass jars whereas fragrance oils are often cheap and come in "larger" plastic jars.

Also, tea tree aka melaleuca oil is a HARD NO.

In general, never diffuse anything you can’t feed. But remember that just because something is safe to eat doesn’t mean it’s safe to breath. There is no true scientific research on this yet and people disagree.

I’m cautious about oils, but I’ve diffused lavender, geranium, jasmine, rosemary, mandarin and other floral/fruity oils over the past year and a half I’ve had my canary (I have yet to get a parrot) with no ill effects- he seems happy and healthy as ever. If a canary is fine with these chances are your bird will be too. Haven’t tried anything else though.

I'm not a believer in natural oils and I am certainly a non-believer regarding their 'benefits.' That all Said, I defer happily to: Kiwi's Mom and SilverSaga regarding this subject.

If your home has an aroma that you're not happy with, search it out and eliminate it! The result is; one would need far less 'covering' aromas.

If you have a newer forced air furnace, add a whole house air exchange unit and if it does not have the 3" (75 mm) filter, upgrade that at the same time. You will find a major difference in your home.

I've been advised NOT to use 'scented' products of ANY kind around Skittles by my vet. Whether it be diffused oils, scented candles (lit), incense or air freshener sprays.

That being said, using a "pleasant smelling", 'naturally occurring' source for air freshening should be used as a substitute.

Maybe using a safe spice or something like pine needles.

What I do is wait til after Skittles is in bed and I will either use scented melts in a heated warmer since Skittles sleeps in the bedroom at the other end of the apartment and the door is closed at night. That's also when I do my housework that requires the use of any cleaning products. The way my apartment is set up, the scents never reach the bedroom. By the time Skitty wakes up, whatever has been released into the air is gone because I have a large air purifier in the living room that is 'supposed' to remove all 'harmful chemicals' from the air (including ones harmful to small animals). Given the amount of money I paid for it, I expected it would do just that and I haven't had a problem so far and I've had Skittles for going on seven years.

Rio (Yellow sided conure) sadly no longer with us
another option would be to use a nice smelling potted plant (a safe one to eat one of course) then you don't need to keep buying oils and such every few months
