Question about mirrors

Ok Chuy used to have little blue colored mirror in his cage. He would stand on his perch in front of it and often peck at it until the mirror finally broke off......so I decided to buy him a little bit bigger mirror, but this mirror is trimmed in yellow.

When I put it in his cage yesterday, he wouldn't even go up to that perch. He wanted nothing to do with it and kept his distance from it....it was actually funny to us.....how he wouldn't go up to his favorite perch....lol

Do you think it has anything to do with the color? He has acted strange in the past when my wife wore a yellow shirt.

Or is it that Conures are not fond of mirrors. Or maybe I went about presenting him hi is new mirror the wrong way.?......I have read that most owners don't even give their birds mirrors.....but he loved his old one.

Thanks for your input.

I would keep mirrors away. Like you say many people don't give mirrors, the reason is that they can often bond to the mirror resulting in unwanted behavior such as screaming, depression, mating behaviors and even hostility towards people. It sounds a little like Chuy's wondering where his friend has gone and the new one is an invader. I would be tempted to remove the mirror altogether and give him other toys to enjoy

Hi there,

while I understand LordTriggs reason for not having a mirror, I must say, my previous bird, a Parakeet ONLY liked to play with a BLUE bordered mirror.... When I have put a yellow or green bordered mirror in, he wouldn't get close to it..... when changed to the blue one again, all was fine.

My current bird, a GCC named Pico, has a metal bordered mirror with a little bell and he loves to play with it, no aggression no bonding, just another toy with bell.... He loves all kind of different bells, they are his favorite toys.....

But yes, I definitely would say that the color makes a difference.....

Just my observation.

Good point jce2005, not all birds have a bad interaction with a mirror. I mostly base my choice off of a Kakariki my step-dad had who became so bonded to his mirror he refused to do anything else apart from eat and drink, we tried to take the mirror away and after the fight the poor guy began to bite and cut himself so the mirror stayed until his passing

Thanks for the help guys.....I tried the yellow mirror once again last night and he'll have nothing to do with it...won't even go near it......so I may look for a blue bordered one or one with a toy or bell connected.....he really enjoyed his other mirror....and I will keep you guys posted......thanks again!

And then there's the Rb, who doesn't care at all for ANY mirrors... doesn't hate 'em, just doesn't react. Not to little ones, not to big ones on the wall.

Chuy is just beautiful. I certainly wouldn't mind more photos!

I don't have any mirrors for my birds but my old budgie had a mirror with a bell and tried to mate with it on a daily occassion. I was too young at that time to recognize what is happening and remove it.

clark likes mirrors but I honestly believe he is not bonded to it.....Maybe he's vain. I can't say if it's good or bad but he like them, but doesn't like....bond with them.. I think he's figured out the concept.
