Hey gang. I’m trying to understand some Conure behaviour. At times, my Kiwi will get excited and will “charge” our faces. He doesn’t bite or nip but he does “rub” his beak and vocalizes with little sounds. Not sure what this means. It’s not aggressive or threatening although someone might easily think so. Any ideas?

Sounds like he is just happy to see you. My Conure doesn't "charge" but does go quickly to my face/neck and rub his beak on me.
He just seems happy at that moment.

How old is Kiwi? You may guess that I'm wondering about hormonal/mating issues. I hear that small conures usually mature at around 2-3 years of age. It may indeed be just friendly, playful stuff, certainly, but I'd be vigilant. If/when things get aggressive or risque, you may want to look into avoiding touching/rubbing the backside, regulating the light schedule, maybe even a quick time-out for unacceptable behavior... keeping in mind that a lot of parronts just tolerate quite a bit of this stuff as long as there is no aggression.

Attention seeking behavior + Love. I'd just enjoy it, it's why you got a conure.....

Yoda and I have a little kissy game that resulted from this behavior. I used to make little kissy noises and try to kiss him on his head and dodge his beak as he tried to "kiss" my lips and dodge my kisses. Now, Yoda makes the same little kissy noises that I do and it's become one of my favorite things. Bonus, I always end up laughing and then Yoda mimics my laugh right back at me. I swear it's the CUTEST and SWEETEST thing ever! :D

On the other hand, if I bring anything to my mouth (food, lipstick, pills, straw), Yoda 'lunges' at my mouth because he wants whatever I'm having. This is LESS fun though, because he can nip painfully when he does this if he's too excited. So that's a behavior I work to discourage. (1. Don't have him on my shoulder when bringing things to my lips. 2. Floor time if he nips hard 3. The kissy game is the encouraged alternative behavior that results in him getting treats and/or love and attention)

Thanks. Kiwi is still just a baby. He’s only 2.5 months old. I had a feeling it was signs of being happy but I wasn’t sure. Skittles never did this. Kiwi is just the sweetest. He loves to snuggle in my hand and nap. I loved when Skittles did that and missed it so much when he passed.
