Hi guys, I'm new here. I got a jenday conure 3 days ago. He was very quiet and shy, sat in the same 1 corner of his cagr and looked uncomfortable. I took him out of his cage (with a towel as the lady I got him from said he bites people her not comfortable with, he doesn't like fingers or hands and she got bit whilst I was there so she used a towel) and put him on his play stand...

He was very scared but we were told he loves sunflower seeds so we gave him some as a treat. (He's on a pellet and fresh fruit diet)

The lady said he was between 3-4 years old (I have no idea) and that if I wanted to train him to step up etc I would need a clicker.

I have put some toys in his cage including a ladder a paper shredder and CD noise ball thingy

I have had some time with him these past 2 days and he has stepped up fine and i even walked over to his cage with him on the training stick...question is, what's next? I've never had a conure before, always had cocktateils or IRN...

Do I need a clicker? What should I train the bird to do? I love animals with character and I'd love to be able to bond with him and spend lots of time with him without him being uncomfortable...

Any suggestions or tips would be very much appreciated...

Thank You xx

Clicker training is vastly helpful, as when we're praising our birds with our voices we can unknowingly change tone, pitch, add words, etc. And then it's not the same to the bird.

I am somewhat new to parrots, but it sounds like you haven't given him enough time to acclimate- it's best to leave them in their cage for at least a few days at least to get used to surroundings, unless he's asking to be let out. And forcibly removing him from his cage will only hinder things. It's best to let him come out on his own.

Getting bitten is part of having a new parrot, or having parrots in general. I've been bitten by my little one so much as he learns to trust me and tests my patience but you just have to learn to take the bite. Using sunflower seeds is a great training tool. :)

I'll hop in and refer you to this link, which I have used and am still using!

Clicker itself isn’t necessary. A simple keyword works as well, but like charging a clicker, you have to take a couple days to charge the keyword before you deploy it in training sessions.

I made a video which shows exactly how to charge your keyword (“clicker training without the clicker”), and how to deploy it with the most simple behavior you can teach, target training.
