Should I be worried!?!

Hi! My mom and I got a baby green cheek conure about 8 months back, and he is going through his first molting. On his back, near his tail feathers, is a rather weird looking feather connected to a little red bead (I guess that's how to describe it). It basically looks like a tube worm with inverse colors (red on the bottom, white on the top). My mom says she'll keep an eye on it, but she doesn't seem too worried. However, this is my first conure, so I was wondering if anyone could help me out? Should we be worried? Is it normal? Is it just a weird looking feather? Thanks in advance for the help!

P.S. I know how to hold a bird, so do not worry, the bird was not in any harm what so ever. In fact, he was calm. I was holding him as you see in the picture so I could get a good picture without him bitting me full force.

That looks like the preen gland to me (if it’s right above the tail). Do a quick google search and check out the pictures to compare. If so, it’s a gland that produces oils that your bird uses to take care of his feathers. There’s usually a little tuft of feather sticking out of the gland and you’ll notice your little one going there to get some oil to smooth over their feathers when they are preening.

Things that worry and freak out new bird owners

Preening gland (uropygial gland - not all parrots have one!)
"Hole" underneath beak (interramal region or interramal space)
Holes on side of head (their ears!)
Hole in tongue (glottis - connects to choanal slit - "windpipe" in birds)
