Time out of cage

Green Cheek conure Bing Bing is his name.
I have a question concerning how much time I am able to give Bingbing out of his cage. He is able to fly and I live with family. We do have 3 cat's and a dog so when bing is out we are confined to one room in the house which is our bedroom no big deal there is plenty of space he fly's around a bit from time to time and hangs out on me or on my desk during time out. Our day consists of waking up around 430 a.m. this is the time I do his cage cleaning and cut his fruit etc. During this time bing is out for about 30 min while I prepare everything. He then is caged during the work day by an window with a bird feeder there so he has many birds all day coming and going and a well equipped cage as far as toy's and things to mess with. Once I am home from work I live in Daytona so nearly every day he is rolled out onto our screened in porch where he spends a bit of time outside kind of :). I then bring him in and after dinner I spend 1.5 to 2 hours with him out of the cage every day. Bingbing
is happy seems happy shows zero signs of not being happy. I was just wondering how other conure owner's feel about the daily routine we have? He says a few words and is gentle (accept for the nibble bites). My family also interacts with bing but no one accept myself takes him out of the cage.

It sounds like a great routine you have. As long as you can provide at least a couple hours a day of outside play with some more on weekends, I think your schedule is fine. You did mention getting up early and cutting his fruit, I hope that you are not feeding him only fruit as it contains tons of sugar but he should also be getting veggies -- peppers, broccoli, carrots, peas, etc. you should try to limit fruit to only a couple times a week.

Other then that, as long as the cage he is in is big enough for him to open his wings and stretch , he should be fine with your work schedule. Do you have a radio in the room he's in, or a TV? It may help to leave it on for him some days while you are away.

Your routine sounds very much like mine :). I do leave the radio on for my birds while I’m at work, and change out their toys and chewables often so that they don’t get bored with their daytime in-cage entertainment. It sounds like you are tuned in to how he is doing!

Rio (Yellow sided conure) sadly no longer with us
sounds like a nice routine to me!

It would be nice to have birds out all day every day, but reality is a ***** and doesn't let that happen. All you can do is your best and hope your little guy is happy which he sounds

Like Scott says, Quality is more important than quantity

I feel better, I worry that though it's my best may not be what's best for an animal meant to be free. I have a bunch of 4k bird shows I rotate threw on youtube for bing and also alexa has awesome tropical rain forest skill and bird sounds skills that I play when I am away. I recently placed a bird feeder just outside his window where a family of cardinal's are at all day off and on so that's cool it has a squirrel that climbs it for seed also which he freaks out about lol. I appreciate your responses.

The Rickeybird, 38-year-old Patagonian Conure
Well, I guess I'll tell my tale...
It's a long one (in durationand narrative)!

I got the Rickeybird in 1984. When I walked into a bird store in New Mexico 33 years ago, the Rickeybird (a 3-month-old chick) flapped and flew and scrambled into my arms, turned on his back, and grabbed my fingers with his feet. He seemed glued to me. It was a perfect storm of my impulsiveness, his instant adoration, and the fact that I had just gotten paid by my college work-study job... I took him home. Using his band, I traced his breeder. We exchanged photos and letters (this was pre-'net, y'all!)... and she could have been my sister! We were both tall, thin, with long red hair and Poindexter glasses, long faces and big toothy smiles. The Rb thought his mommy (or close enough) had walked in to rescue him. And that was that.
I kept him pretty well socialized until we moved up North to Ohio... then, one thing led to another, and I failed him, really. He is now a one-person bird, sadly. In my defense, since he became a rooster at about 4 years of age, he really has been a little Genghis Khan. Genghis Conure, my vet calls him.

Back to history... I was in college when I got him, and then grad school, so I spent LOTS of time with him. Then it was time to go to work!
There were years (about 25 of them) when 5-6 days a week, I was gone at 7:30-ish and back at 6-ish.
Some did and will consider me wrong and think I should have re-homed him.
Anyway, here is what I think made it work.
I moved and got new jobs maybe 5 times or so. BUT...
Every morning, he had at least ten minutes, and every evening, he had 20 or so. I have always kept him on a natural light schedule, in a separate room, so sometimes those times together were in the dark. During the day, he had a big window looking out on something interesting, a television on one of his favorite channels (Music channels, CNN - he loves talking heads), a biggg cage, lots of fun foods, and a few toys that I changed out regularly).
He KNEW he could count on those two crumby sessions a day. Somehow we both made it.
I'm now retired and times are pretty good again. But when I first retired, he was standoffish and aggressive, at times, and not nearly as affectionate and cuddly as he was 30 years ago. Of course, he became a rooster at about 4-5.
He is famous (infamous?) for his quirks, weirdness, and overall trouble-maker-ness. I take responsibility. Today he is flighted, fearless, spoiled, and adored. We worked it out. I spend most of the day with his bad self now, and I know we are back in love. I guess my motto is... don't give up, do your best, and don't be unhappy with the results. Love your bird and yourself for what you are, separately and together.
