I got woken up from a nap this afternoon when UPS rang the bell. I jumped out of my chair (still half asleep) and my leg was asleep and I twisted my ankle badly. By the time I got out the apt door, there was already a HUGE bubble of swelling on the side of my ankle. I managed to make it to get my package but Skittles was having a fit.

At first, I thought it was the package (which was actually VERY small) so I hid it even though it made no sense. But he kept going off. I went to put some ice on my ankle, wrapped in a towel, and he got even louder. That made even less sense. Skittles LOVES towels and they do NOT frighten him one bit. I actually got a bit concerned so I called my neighbor and she told me, "I bet he senses you're injured and in a lot of pain and is reacting to that". I kind of dismissed it. But just for kicks, I decided to reassure him that "I'm okay, daddy is okay! Its alright!" and he made tons of "kissy noises" and then quieted right down. I was dumbfounded.

I went to lay down in bed so I could elevate my ankle and he got all cuddly with me. Precious little angel!

It is so easy to forget just how tightly connected they are to our emotions.

"I called my neighbor and she told me, "I bet he senses you're injured and in a lot of pain and is reacting to that"." Caring people are everywhere and you have one next door! Consider a Big Smile and a Thank-You.

Hope the swelling has gone down!

It actually has gone down considerably.

I am just so used to him being overdramatic and obsessed with what HE wants that I forget he does actually care about what I am going through too. lol. I'd be more likely to think he would be saying "I don't care that you're injured, I want a bath and I want it now! And get me a treat for after too, my little slave." But that's a sun for ya.

Ouch, that seems painful! Something I would totally do though haha. I panic when I get a knock on the door and Boomer is out because I know I have to get him in the cage or another room somehow.

I remember this one time, I was taking a nap, having called in sick from work. Loud bangs on the door, it's the police he says. I jolted up, half asleep and wondered what I did wrong. Boomer was out and by then having a fit because of the loud bangs. Tried to get him in the cage, no dice. Placed him in another room, he flies right back. I'm panicking, still disoriented from being half asleep and being sick. Minutes pass, cop is banging louder. I manage an unsteady "I-I'm coming, hold on." But I totally sound like someone trying to stuff a dead body under the bed. He could hear commotion from me trying to get Boomer in.

About 3-4 minutes later, I got Booms in the cage. Now the cop is mad. He said I need to open the door right away when police is at the door. That my car is parked in the lot where they're about to have the Thursday Farmer's Market, and that he did me the courtesy of knocking at the door before they tow it away. That this was the second time (cop is confused because this was the first time it happened but I wasn't about to argue). I just said "Sorry, officer!!!" and ran down the stairs (2nd floor) as fast as I can, stil reeling, leaving the door to my apartment wide open, in case he wants to inspect for that dead body. Ran to my car still reeling and re-parked. I came back and cop was gone. Some neighbors were looking lol. That was my first direct interaction with a police officer ever in my 34 (at the time) years.

Sorry for the novel! I forgot all about that story and wanted it memorialized. I hope you feel better soon! Skits was just concerned for you :D

Now you have the perfect proof that the little guy is taking care of you, as well as you do take care of him. You're both inseparable.
And kudos to your niehgbour, it must have been so obvious to her :)

@BoomBoom
It must have been dramatic :) Only two type of people will understand what you felt: bird people and the people seeking a place to hide a corpse when a P.O. knocks at the door hahaha

You both guys thanks for sharing!

I know I joked about him being 'bossy' and what not, but he's actually EXTREMELY affectionate.

I know he is protective. He demands to "inspect" anything new that comes into the apartment. He warns me of threats and intruders. But these are all easy to understand for me.

So naturally, that was my first thought- he sees something thats a perceived threat or is alerting me to something but I just couldn't figure it out! Normally, it doesn't take me long cause he is pretty good about pointing out the exact threat but all he kept doing was staring at me and screaming.

Turns out, thats where the danger was, with me. I just could not believe how much of a tantrum he threw and then just suddenly stopped as soon as I went over and pet him and told him I was okay. It was actually incredibly sweet. Yet it left me in total amazement. lol.

Everyone in my RL tells me he is so super-bonded to me and I never think about how important I must be to him, I only think about how important he is to me.

@BoomBoom Loved that story. Skittles is the same way with loud commotion. I purposely turned the ringers off on two of my three phones and turned the ringer down on the third one. Its loud enough I can hear it. I also have a note on my door regarding 'knocking'. I keep meaning to put a sign out on my door that says "Caution: Free-flighted parrot on premises".

UPDATE:

When I woke up today (Friday), I got up and woke Skittles up and let him out and did a few things around the house and went back to lay down. When I woke up this afternoon, I talked with my neighbor and she asked how my ankle was and I told her it seems to be fine and then I looked at it and while the swelling on the side had totally subsided, the WHOLE front/top foot was swollen and black and blue near the top. Two smallest toes were beat red and some severe bruising on the outer side of my foot. My neighbor told me I should have gotten it checked yesterday but I thought it was just a sprain.

I called my PCP to see what they thought I should do and they recommended going to Urgent care (instead of the ER) but it was almost 4:30p and I told my neighbor that I wouldn't get back in time to put Skittles to bed on time so I was gonna wait til tomorrow. She looked at me and said "you are unbelievable" and I said, "hey, he's my baby!" And she said, "I know he is and I know how important he is to you, but you may have broken bones and you're worried that Skittles won't get to sleep on time? You can't take care of him if you don't take care of yourself". So I went.

Turns out, I broke two bones (little bones) ligaments tore off and took pieces of bone with them. I have to follow up with orthopedics on Monday.

Skittles wasn't happy. I didn't get home til just after 9p. He had been in his cage over 4hrs and thats not normal for him. So I let him out for a bit when I got home and gave him some grapes. Things are all good now.

So thats my drama for the day. Sorry I forgot the popcorn.

I'm sorry to hear that :( I'm glad you had it checked so it doesn't cause any further complication. I totally understand your sentiments over Skits. It was unusual for him having a break in his daily routine but no where close to traumatic so I'm sure he will be just fine.

Best of luck on the follow up visit. Wishing for a very speedy recovery.

Yikes that sounds awful! I hope you have a speedy and complete recovery. Isn’t it amazing how our fids know when something is wrong with us? Melts my heart.

And @BoomBoom thanks for sharing this fantastic story. I got a good laugh!

Geeeeeeez, what a tale. Hang in there.

What sweet birds y'all have. I have yet to experience any good will or sympathy from the Rb when something is wrong with me. Lots of bell-ringing and yelling. Doesn't want any closeness or such. Maybe he thinks I'm contagious... lol

You take care, Daddy and Skitty!

I was elevating my leg in bed earlier and Skittles climbed down and was rubbing his head in my lower leg hair. He likes to burrow in my chest hair, and he DOES have a habit of climbing to the foot of the bed to "inspect" around. He will literally walk along the entire length of the bed and 'look' for threats, its hilarious. lol. So my guess is, Dr.Skitty was in the house and doing a leg exam. lol. He went to bed shortly after, so my guess is that things are improving! Who needs health insurance when you got fids? lol
