Hi Everyone!

I am new to the forum and have adopted/rehomed a 1.5 year old Sun Conure. We followed our own advice to adopt not shop and we have a real gem. We've had her for 3 weeks and love her. She does get loud at points but as soon as we agreed that she was just being a parrot, then it didn't bother us. Then once it didn't bother us, she stopped doing it so often. All about the energy we bring to the relationship. We once had a Moluccan (sp) Cockatoo so we know loud. lol

Every day with her is just getting better and better. I think we found the right bird for us. She's getting better with me walking away from her or leaving the room. At first she was flying to me as soon as I moved away from her and that was getting a little frustrating because I do have things I need to do that she can't be with me. I am really happy with how she is transitioning into our family. I'm going to take her to the vets to get her nails done and have them check to see if her beak needs trimming.

I'm sure I am going to have a gazillion questions to ask everyone here but wanted to start out with an intro.

Here is our Coco.

Hi,

Thank you everyone for the warm welcome.

Desi, I'm so glad you say that about her beak. I was unsure but I kept thinking it was too long. She doesn't bite me anymore now that she's setting in but when she did, it sure hurt! lol I have an appt tomorrow at the vets to get that done.

Thanks again everyone!

Umbrella Cockatoo- 15? years old..I think?
If you get it trimmed, make sure vet uses hand-tools only (no dremmels)

AND WELCOME!!!

Welcome to a great place, I'm new too. There are so many new people coming and going, its good to hear all their questions as well as all the fun stuff. The beak trimming has me thinking if my YNA Bill needs his beak trimmed? How does a person know when their friend needs a trim? I also want to know how this affects the bird during and after? I just think that this is a bit of a thing, just like taking a child to the doc for something? I don't want to freak out my friend and make him mad at me.

Post a picture of Bill's beak Mike..it is pretty easy to determine if it needs a trim just by its over-all looks. Is it ragged looking? Does it look like the front/tips are too pointy? Is it cracked? etc etc. A CAV knows how to trim and it doesn't hurt the birdie. My CAV automatically gave Smokey a beak trim once a year without me even asking. Greys are kind of known to get over grown beaks

Hi!
I was just going to take Coco to the vet and ask them about her beak. I couldn't really tell. I would look at pictures on line and I was unsure. But once I posted here, Desi said that it looks like it needs to be done so that just expedited things and I called the vets right away and have an appt tomorrow. I have lots of wood and toys for her and she loves to chew, but it hasn't made a difference in her beak so I'll just have the vet do it and hopefully I won't need to again.

Welcome to you both!
I see you are using Photobucket, paying the ransom? Or is there a way around now?

Yeah about that... Haha! Of course it doesn't show that "photobucket" splashed across the photo in the post preview. I used Photobucket years ago when I sold on eBay. It didn't put it's logo on the pics then so obviously that's changed. But I will be looking for another alternative because having my photos look like that just won't cut it. lol I'm also not going to pay the ransom. Unless I can't find something free that will do. :)

Welcome!

I would buy her a "Cement Perch", they are sold at all major pet stores, and they automatically keep their toenails trimmed and they like to rub their beaks on them all the time too, especially to wipe food off. They are great for keeping both the toenails and the beak rounded/non-pointy and usually their toenails stay to the point they don't need trimmed at all...

***Very important that your Vet doesn't use a Dremel or other "power" tool, only hand files, as the dust from beak trimmings with a Dremel has actually killed birds. They inhale it all through their respiratory systems.

Also, if you're going for a yearly Wellness Exam, I would make sure your CAV does routine blood-work, as an overgrown beak is often a sign of Fatty Liver Disease, especially if the bird has been on a seed-mix only diet. A supplementation of Milk-Thistle once daily can correct it, along with a change to natural-pellet as their staple-diet.
