I live alone so my birds get little chance for socialization. Only one friend is interested in interacting with the birds. Pampa attacks, a bluff attack, but scary all the same when friends come over so is always caged when company comes. On Thanksgiving my adult son who has little bird experience took Pampa out. Pampa just sat on his shoulder for a good hour aggressively puffed up and aggressive even to me. When he calmed down my son started handling him and within 30 minutes they were best friends. It was amazing to see. He was doing things with Pampa I had never done, like scratching his head and neck, and while on his finger swinging him backwards and forwards onto his back into the palm of his hand. Turns out Pampa does a lot of bluffing that my son managed to work through. Consequently I am braver handling Pampa and I think Pampa is happier because he is a really hands on cuddly bird.
A couple days later my granddaughters were over, aged 3 and 11, and they wanted me to get the Budgies out. The budgies are not handled enough so not very tame. They are still very young. I was flabbergasted when the wildest of the two repeatedly let the 3 year old pick it up and remained on her finger without flying away. The other usually tamer one just flew away and wouldn’t remain on fingers. I wonder if it could be age related. They are a month or so apart in age and probably somewhere between 4 and 6 months old. The Budgies are named Simeon and Garfunkel. It is so cute hearing my 3 year old granddaughter say Garfunkel, he was the one being so sweet with the potentially dangerous child.
