Our DNA test came back today, and it turns out that my Hestia is a boy!

Bright side: No need to worry about egg laying and attendant issues.

Less bright side: he was just starting to learn how to say "Good girl!"

I cannot knowingly have a male bird named after the goddess of the hearth, so I guess it's time to come up with a new one. we were thinking Hephaestus, but I fear it sounds a little too different and will confuse him.

Ideas welcome!

Congrats on your boy! This is exactly why I went with a unisex name. I love the Gods and Godesses when I'm sure of the gender (Ra is my golden betta). You will find the right fit, and he will it right.

I'm leaning towards sky deities since he's a bird. :)

Thank you!

We kept the (incorrectly gendered) name he came with, or I probably would have picked a unisex name, too.

Thanks for the list!

Sunny a female B&G macaw;
Japie (m) & Appie (f), both are congo african grey;
All are rescues- had to leave their previous homes for 'reasons', are still in contact with them :)
Congrats :) Always fun to know if you have a boy/girl.
No need to change the name of course, the parrot does not care- it is his 'contactcall in human-speak'.
If you need something male-souding, why not add an "n" to the end?

(my name is Christa, for a boy it would be Christian etc. lots of female names end with -a and the male version ends with -n )

Penny was Chloe, but she never responded to that or says it. She does know she is Penny now! Her little head pops up if I say her name..

We have a girl bird named Melvin. Also, I say "good girl" or "good boy" interchangeably to my dogs, who don't have any concept of gender anyway. "Good" they recognize because it comes with treats!

Salty was assumed to be a boy from day 1. We just had the sex checked overthe summer n confirmed that, but it would have been Saltine if he turned out to be a girl.

We named our female quaker Harry for Houdini before we knew her true gender, the name fit her so well we kept it. She refused to say the word girl for years but now she says, "Heyyyy girl, pretty girl and be a good girl," when she's referring to me," in addition to "good boy, sweet boy or heyyyy boy," when referring to our male birds.

Jim, you were the first person I thought of when I got the news!

2 of my 3 kids are in revolt over this result and insist that Hestia is a girl. I'm wondering if it would be easier to go the "boy for medical purposes only" route while toying with a few alternate names (Horus, Hephaestus with the nickname Festus, Hestios (Greek masculine version of Hestia)). It's been a confusing few days at our house.
