Nico - male Turquoise GCC
I just came back after I left Nico for 58 hours to go on a short trip out of town. My roommate (who he likes) checked on him at least twice a day to make sure he was alive and his food and water were adequate.
However.
-I came home to find that around five of his feathers littered the floor of his cage. Normally this wouldn’t be concerning but at least two of the feathers were chopped up or bent, and I worry he might have pulled them out (aka stress-related feather plucking).
-I also suspect he wasn’t eating as much as usual, since his water bowl was astonishingly clean considering it was changed out 24 hours ago and his habit of making “bird soup”. As soon as I came home he started eating ferociously.
-I made sure his cage basically looked like a toy store before I left, with lots of toys he can wreck. There’s no evidence he played with any of his toys except for one small wooden one, which could be odd considering he loves wrecking toys.
-While there are no bald spots anywhere on him, there is a spot on his lower back that has a concentration of “stressed” feathers (black while the rest of his body is mostly green or gray)
-His most recent poops are on the wet side, although they are still in the normal range.

Several factors that add to the worry:
-Obviously the fact that I left him for 58 hours. I thought it would be fine since my roommate was there to make sure he was fed and he had plenty of toys, but I’m afraid this might have been too long for him? I don’t know. He’s been left before for an overnight trip and was completely fine when I came home.
-I just recently changed out a fabric tent he had in his cage and replaced it with a woven mat made of wood fibers after re-researching the horrors of happy huts. He slept in the tent every night and I know he loved it, this may be a stressor.
-I’m leaving him again in a couple of days (with a trusted bird-sitter, fortunately) for a two-week trip out of the country. This trip was unavoidable (family matters) and I’m worried that this might stress him out further.
-We went to a vet for an annual a week and a half ago, and while everything seemed normal they told me to put him on a probiotic just in case and I haven’t been able to get my hands on one.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Added detail: the mangled feathers on the floor of his cage may be because he seems to have developed a habit of chewing on his old feathers after they come out during preening. He’s also had a bad wing trim a long time ago which may explain why the ends look weird.

Umbrella Cockatoo- 15? years old..I think?
It sounds like possible stress. Does your bird have anyone that it likes other than you who lives nearby (they maybe could say hello while you are away). Some people have had luck skyping their birds.
For my bird, 48 really made her angry with me when I returned--scratch that...she was elated when I came in and then mad for about a week after. You might see if you can get the bird to the vet just for piece of mind while you are out of town, but that might further agitate things.
Does your sitter know what to do in the event of a broken blood feather (just in case).

Your vet doesn't sell bene-bac probiotic?

It does sound like stress, probably a combination of you being gone and him locked inside his cage for that long...Skyping or video-calls are a really good idea, if you can do that once a day just to keep him calmed down while you're gone for 2 weeks, because obviously he can't go for that long without eating or drinking...

I agree with the daily Probiotic, I give all of my birds a probiotic daily...It is weird your Vet didn't have one to give you/sell you...You can buy Benebac at any Petco, PetSmart, or any other pet shop, as well as at Tractor Supply, and you can also buy Qwiko Avian Probiotic at any Petco, Petsmart, and most pet shops/birds shops...

My Burt The Bird wouldn't eat when I was away and list weight. I had to have the bird sitter commit to sitting and talking to him for a half hour every day I was gone. I didn't have the sitter take my bird out, but to sit by the cage and talk to him. It really worked the next time I had to travel for work and the sitter was doing the talking to him for a half hour or so he did great! Didn't loose weight, didn't seem so stressed when I came home.

The weight thing sounds like stress, unlike Nico, when I am away Ollie gets fat haha. about the feathers, unless then ends of them are bloody I would just chalk that up to them falling out (possibly from being more active in the cage than usual and maybe hitting the bars with the feathers more) naturally and then being played with out of being bored.
