I just came back after I left Nico for 58 hours to go on a short trip out of town. My roommate (who he likes) checked on him at least twice a day to make sure he was alive and his food and water were adequate.
However.
-I came home to find that around five of his feathers littered the floor of his cage. Normally this wouldn’t be concerning but at least two of the feathers were chopped up or bent, and I worry he might have pulled them out (aka stress-related feather plucking).
-I also suspect he wasn’t eating as much as usual, since his water bowl was astonishingly clean considering it was changed out 24 hours ago and his habit of making “bird soup”. As soon as I came home he started eating ferociously.
-I made sure his cage basically looked like a toy store before I left, with lots of toys he can wreck. There’s no evidence he played with any of his toys except for one small wooden one, which could be odd considering he loves wrecking toys.
-While there are no bald spots anywhere on him, there is a spot on his lower back that has a concentration of “stressed” feathers (black while the rest of his body is mostly green or gray)
-His most recent poops are on the wet side, although they are still in the normal range.
Several factors that add to the worry:
-Obviously the fact that I left him for 58 hours. I thought it would be fine since my roommate was there to make sure he was fed and he had plenty of toys, but I’m afraid this might have been too long for him? I don’t know. He’s been left before for an overnight trip and was completely fine when I came home.
-I just recently changed out a fabric tent he had in his cage and replaced it with a woven mat made of wood fibers after re-researching the horrors of happy huts. He slept in the tent every night and I know he loved it, this may be a stressor.
-I’m leaving him again in a couple of days (with a trusted bird-sitter, fortunately) for a two-week trip out of the country. This trip was unavoidable (family matters) and I’m worried that this might stress him out further.
-We went to a vet for an annual a week and a half ago, and while everything seemed normal they told me to put him on a probiotic just in case and I haven’t been able to get my hands on one.
Any advice would be appreciated.
