Hidden or Visible Treats

I guess I should have asked this at the very beginning before training. I can get Loki to step up as long as she sees the millet in the other hand. She took to target training pretty quickly but bites the target stick then runs to the other hand for the treat.

I started with the visible treats as I really needed her to come out of the old cage and move into the new one. That could only happen if she saw the treat. Should I continue training without her seeing the treat? Is that part of building trust?

I always show the treat. I think that is part of the project. Ta-dah
Is always "Show me the money" before she works ;)

Thanks Laurasea, that helps. I guess I will continue to show treats until she is a willing partner without seeing it.

Even after she gets it and you know longer need the treat , every once in a while reaffirm the command or trick with a treat. Many times you will notice they don't seem excited to train and that could be why , no reward no trick. :)

1) by show the treat, do you mean keep it inches from the face at all times? If so, this is a technique called luirjng and needs to stop. Showing the treat each time is fine, exprcted even. But itā€™s a quick ā€œhereā€™s the treatā€ then drop it out of sight.

2) biting the stick hard should NOT be rewarded. No treats for aggressiveness!

Thanks for the tips. I should clarify that she is not biting the stick in target training, she is putting her beak to it. But I appreciate the warning and make sure not to encourage aggressiveness.

Only once have I seen aggressiveness and that is when she would not step up to return to the cage. It was not a bite per say but like a warning bark. It surprised me and thankfully she has only done that once.

Yep they don't like to go back to the cage. To help with that I put them in and take them back out right away several times a day. I also will give treats in the cage at night time. Mostly just My GCC, I show her her bowl has some yummies in it. I just keep positive thing.

Taking her in and out of cage is a good idea. I will also sweeten the bowl with some treats too.
