Pampa Blue Crown Conure lost 6/18/2019 ā˜¹ļø
I have had Pampa a BCC for a year now. Itā€™s been a bit rocky. Even with research I was ill prepared. But Pampa and I, in a large part thanks to clicker training, have found our groove and are living happily.

So the big decision. A year ago I fell in love with a Jenday baby at Petco. I was about ready to give into impulse and buy him but he was sold and I got Pampa, a 3 year old blue crown instead. That very baby Jenday is now being rehomed. A mother with young children has him and although she did research she finds with young children she just doesnā€™t have the time, and he is loud. She also questions whether the hustle and bustle of small kids running and playing may be over stimulating and adding to the bird calling.

My concerns: will two hands-on friendly conures be too much for me? Will I be able to live with the Jenday noise level! Will a noisy Jenday cause my relatively quiet Blue Crown to turn into a screecher (this being my biggest concern). Should I be worried about raising a youngster to sexual maturity.

Reasons for getting him: socialized to children and coincidentally bonded to a classmate of my granddaughter who is campaigning for me to get him. I love the look of Jendays and this bird is way cool, he does a little tapping dance with his foot. ITs THE SAME BIRD THAT STARTED ME DOWN THIS PATH. And mainly I canā€™t help but think having another feathered friend in the house, even if they arenā€™t besties, would be company for Pampa when I am not home. I am the only human in my relatively quiet house.

My two biggest concerns is having the time and energy to meet the social needs of both birds and the noisiness of a Jenday. I do not understand how multi bird owners handle or have time for one on one time.

Opinions and personal experiences welcome.

And as a side note and off subject, Pampa is being noisier lately. Iā€™m working with hormone issues, giving more sleep time and diet etc. is the extra screeching related to hormones and spring?

The very first bird I hand-fed and weaned was a Jenday Conure -- I was 12 years old!

He was my best friend but didn't like anyone else in the family (besides my twin sister who looks just like me) and yes he was loud! It's just something you have to let them do from time to time, yes they are vocal and yes they will be loud! Sadly I had to rehome him as I approached college age and my parents would not look after him.

You may face more issues than the ones you have listed, such as the two birds not getting along with each other, and the potential jealousy of your existing blue crown conure. Your others concerns are also valid, it takes a special kind of person to handle loud noise from birds. You have to have lots of patience and preferably a single family home (no neighbors!)

So, my questions for you are.... what is your living situation?

Do you have another large cage for this bird and the income to support two birds?

If the two do not get along, which could be likely, are you willing to spend time with each bird individually and also ensure they get out of cage time daily?

Prepare for the worst -- for them not to get along, for the Jenday to be super noisy, for your Blue Crown to be jealous....so that if things end up not as bad as this, you will be pleasantly surprised!

Lots of members here have multiple birds that get along, and some don't at all and would rather murder each other.... just be prepared for either or something in between. You just never know. A slow introduction would be ideal, with one in a cage and the other out. Don't give them any chances to harm each other and always supervise play time.

I think you know what you want to do already :)

I thought for sure that one was all I could do... Then Baxter found me. It took a while to get my head around it, all the while hoping that she would find a good home before I succumbed to her charm. She had decided that I had to be that home, and had no interest in anyone else. I'm so glad she did. It's a huge adjustment, but in my case, absolutely worth it. My boy Tucker does get insanely jealous when Baxter gets shower time though.

Only you know what is best for you, and no one will fault you for your choice and being honest with yourself about it. I'm just saying that it is working out pretty well for me since I gave in to her demands.

Thx saxguy. Maybe a second bird awaits me, but this isnā€™t the one. Pampa is actually pretty awesome and I want to focus on her and teach her more tricks.
