Hello, I currently own 2 pairs of sun conures and one pair laid their first egg today. My father and I have been breeding birds for quite some time, and we have all the essentials. My father is retired now, and I have read every article on this forum about breeding birds. We are excited and looking forward to increasing our aviary. Any tips or advice would be a great help. Thank you

Hello! Breeding is hard work but if you are educated and have experience as you say then it shouldn't be a problem. I will say having a brooder and hand feeding experience is necessary when breeding (if parents refuse to incubate or abandon babies, you must step in) so hope you have knowledge of it.

My only suggestion is to make sure your breeding pairs are getting a varied diet including CHOP, veggies and fruit, pellets, etc. and also its' important that these birds are checked by a vet to ensure you are not breeding sick birds.

23rd day and the first egg has hatched and he looks in great health. Will be adding pictures later today. Any advice on when to pull the chicks or should I do a mix of handfed formula with parents feeding them as well? Today is day 23 of the first egg being laid and so far one chick, two more eggs left. I’m hoping for the best. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you

If proving capable, let the chicks be parent raised! Share the duties! There is so much to be gained in social skills!

Yes I agree, if this is their and your first clutch I woudl let the parents raise them. They do learn a tremendous amount this way and you can handle the babies every day after they are two weeks old to make them more used to people. As they age, it's important to keep handling them to ensure they stay tame and accept humans.

They look nice and plump, signs of healthy babies!
