Hey All,
I am a new member on this forum and specifically made this account to offer someone a free black capped conure. I own two green cheeked conures and have been recently visiting my neighborhood Petco in Scarsdale , NY (near Yonkers,NY). There I have seen a black capped conure on sale for months. The conure is contained in a small (dirty) glass cage . It is the cutest little thing (5 months) and is always playing alone with it's only toy and hanging from its perch. After visiting it a few times, I noticed that it was the only bird not getting sold. Today however, I was heartbroken to see that it had plucked most of its tail feathers off. It seems to me that the bird is extremely isolated and bored as it has been in that small glass cage for 4-5 months now. When I brought this to the attention of the PETCO employees, they brushed it off as a " genetic defect". It is definitely not a defect as I had seen it's tail a few months prior and it seemed perfectly fine. I'm making this post because I am willing to buy the conure and give it someone who is willing to take it in. Please let me know if someone is interested. I want to get that bird out of there ASAP. Thanks.

You have a great heart. It is so sad when young parrots who should be learning and experiencing so much are stuck in tiny cage with out mental and tactile stimulation. I thank you for trying to help this guy.
I hope you can help the place that sells them to spend more time with the parrots andcset up a traing play area, as otherwise they will just stick a new bird in that birds place.....
I'm far from you and have enough companions in the house to keep me busy.
I hope you do find someone!!! And stick around too!

Pico, gender unknown, is a hand-fed Yellow Sided Green Cheek Conure, born 2015.
I avoid parrot window shopping unless I'm actually ready to welcome a new bird into my home.
It's just too heartbreaking for me to see all those sweet birds needing homes.

While your offer to pay for this bird is very kind and generous, the word FREE might unfortunately increase the odds it will end up with people who have not done their homework and understand the sacrifices they must make to give it a good home - and I mean good from the parrot's perspective.
I learn of so many poorly-informed and poorly-prepared people who get birds, then end up rehoming them thinking "it's just a bad bird". :(

The substantial cost can actually make many people think twice, and do their research, before buying a bird.

Again though, kudos to you for caring about this bird's future.

I’d take it but I am on the otherside of the country. You are very generous and kind. And I do think you can find a good home when offering a free bird. Just be selective and ask questions. Maybe a bird rescue group could help find a home. Good luck finding the perfect home.

I'm assuming you would not be providing the cage, perches, toys, vet bills, etc for this little guy. That makes me think that anyone on THIS forum who would accept your generous offer would also be making a financial commitment and be less likely to be some irresponsible opportunist.

That said, I WISH I were closer and that my husband wouldn't lock me in a closet if I brought home another bird. ;) I sure hope someone takes you up on it though, your story breaks my heart!!

No, unfortunately I won't be providing all the essentials as the bird itself is $600:56:. But hoping someone who is familiar with birds and who already has had pet birds is willing to take it in.

Just an FYI, that little one is reaching his time limit in that store! He will either be shipped to a different store, or returned to the supplier. Possibly worse!

hmm yes, that is what I thought as well. He's been there for way too long. I am going to try my best to purchase him today as they have sent him to see the vet after I scolded them about his condition. Hopefully, the vet sees him today and I can pick him up.

You are a wonderful person !!!!!! Maybe if you aren't able to keep him, you will be able to take more time and find him the right home. He deserves so much better than he has gotten in life so far. Breaks my heart. Maybe you will find you have room for him yourself, I'm at five! Keep us posted!!

thank you! It just breaks my heart to see that poor bird with the cutest personality kept in those conditions. I have two conures who are bonded so it is pretty risky to keep him in my house with them. Also, my husband has made me promise no more birds, lol. I'll try to keep him for 2-3 days at most, but after that I will have to give him up to a bird shelter/rescue group. Will keep this forum posted.

UPDATE : today I called Petco to see if there was an update with the conure and if the vet had seen it. They had the audacity to tell me that it had gotten sold. I knew they were either planning to return it, or put it down so I went to the store and demanded to know what happened to the bird. I felt so bad because i thought it had been put down because of me. Finally, after 10 minutes , they told me that it was in the back and it would stay there until the vet sees it on Tuesday. Until then, it was not allowed to be in the front or on sale. I have no idea what to believe and I'm really hoping that what they're saying is true. Will see on Tuesday.

Oh no! Ugh, did you tell them you wanted to buy the bird????? And most likely just feather picking and a healthy bird. ..... If it's in back I'm sure is in a terrible cage..
I rescued my Penny from a pet store , she was in a shoebox size cage with poop piled high, with matted feathers of poop dirt and dirty water and feather picking, I bought her and ran!!!! I haven't seen them treat other birds that way, was an employee bird...
Anyway I feel ya, I hope you can rescue! I have two bonded birds they ok with Penny

The two bonded conures will be fine! Hubby? Easy fix! And this will give you more time for the birds!:p

haha, if only it was that easy.My hubby will probably divorce me if I get another one :p jokes aside, he really doesn't like the two that I already have because he's not really an animal person. Those two are such a handful , and with a full time job, I really don't think I can manage another one. Hopefully I can find a home soon.

I'd choose Skittles over a human being any day. I'm constantly choosing Skittles over people, including myself. I don't apologize for it either. If people in my life don't like the sacrifices I make or don't agree with them, well then they can leave my life and Skitty and I will do just fine.

I had no idea there was a time limit on bird sales. Skittles had been to three different stores when I got him. He was 1yr-2wks old. But I didn't get him at Petco, I got him at a local chain so maybe thats why he looked so healthy.

Prices are always negotiable! By a lot!

I was just thinking this, especially if he’s been there that long.

You could always buy him, keep him at your place while you find his forever home. Would give you more time that way.

Damn!!! I don't live far from you! ( south central CT) I have two fid's already and unfortunately had to get rid of my house and move in with my brother. He is ok with Amy and BB but would NOT allow me to bring home another one  If I was still in my home I would have jumped on it!

I also notice that in my local AllPets store,if they have had a bird for "too long" the price drops dramatically! I saw a pair of Cockatiels that needed to go,being sold for $225 WITH cage! I didn't think the cage was large enough for two 'tiels, but at this store 'tiels go for an average of $275...depending on mutation.

I surely hope your conure friend has a good outcome.
