I am struggling to find a good bag of seed mix that my guys will eat and not waste half of it. What do you feed your fids?

Sunny the Sun Conure (sept '18, gotcha 3/'19). Mr Jefferson Budgie & Mrs Calliope Budgie (albino) (nov'18 & jan'19). Summer 2021 Baby Budgies: Riker (Green); Patchouli, Keye, & Tiny (blue greywings).
Sunny really likes the Higgins Safflower Gold. I usually drop in a few Tropical NutriBerries as well. She likes those NutriBerries a lot But, she gets quite fussy if I try to actually leave out the Safflower Gold

It's quite possible that the wastage amount May be less than 50%. It's hard to tell though, since I seeds can look un-eaten, or even expand in volume, when they're mostly eaten. (Due to the husks or the half-chewed seeds left behind.)

I was trying to work on switching her over to more of the Harrison's pellets, partly with hope of getting a clearer idea of how much she's eating. Also with pellets she would get all the nutrition in each nibble. Instead of how she normally picks thru & leaves lots of bits. Hard to tell what she is or isn't eating.

However, although my Sunny clearly enjoys the Harrison's pellets, she's also been making it quite clear that, in her opinion, they are merely a variety item, a Side Dish to her Main Meal of Safflower Gold.

I was actually looking into Higgins Sunburst earlier. It looks like there is a variety of things in it. Remi tends to make a huge mess when he eats because he is so picky though. Petey loves safflower seeds and she is more neat when she eats, lol. So funny how they are different.

Unfortunately only for parakeet / finch seed, per the detailed description. Tempting little gadget though. Would save me the trouble of repeatedly pouring the budgies' seeds between two paper plates outside, whilst blowing at them if there's no breeze.

I think it would be awfully difficult to make something like that work for Conure food, though, especially the kinds that contain any treats ie dried fruit, nutmeats, etc.

I did get bag of Higgins Sunburst for Sunny, I was sure she would like it. But also had the two other mixes, Vita Seed and Safflower Gold. I varied them from day to day, and was surprised to realize that my Sunny strongly preferred Safflower Gold.

I also tried Golden Harvest. which I really recommend trying. It smells so delicious!! And it has really wonderful ingredients. Including Pecans. Which, it turns out, are high on my Conure's very specific "Do Not Like" list. So I have most of a bag of, Goldenfeast for Conures in my fridge, waiting for me to find someone to donate it to.

(They also make a wonderful pellet too, called Goldenobles. Which unfortunately contains some ingredient that I am allergic to. :02: However I'd certainly recommend trying them, they seem really great otherwise.)

I haven't used a mix in ages... I can't recall why I migrated away from it... maybe the mess?!
It's Harrison's, produce, and healthy nuts here, some seasonal sunflower seeds from my sister's garden!

Thanks everyone!
I went to several pet stores today looking for something great and in the end I bought some basic cockatiel mix from Pet Supplies Plus - contains millet, oat groats, dried egg food, some kind of bean, that kind of stuff(from the bulk bin), added safflower seed to it, some sunflower seed, dried banana, dried papaya, raisins, and basically made my own mix.
They do eat cooked broccoli, peas, orange, cherries, apples, cooked egg, cooked pasta, mozzarella cheese. I am struggling a bit with Harrison's pellets, but we'll keep trying.
Hopefully, they are getting some nutrients.
Oh, and Remi absolutely loves cooked grits, cream of wheat, granola and rice bits cereal (unsweetened). Petey is more picky.

Levi's faves are Higgins Safflower Gold & Sunburst.
I add a tbsp to his chop & mix it in about an hour before bed.

While he's digging for the seed mix is his also eating his chop.
I don't do it this way to get him to eat his chop. I do it this way to prevent him from just eating the seed mix. :D

I do make him the Goldenfeasts also. He enjoys those cooked.

When I got my bird he was already eating pellets, the Tropican Lifetime Formula. He's a great eater, shows no color preference (only 2 colors in that mix) and I'm one of the weird ones who likes how it smells. Why mess with success, I say.

As far as pellets, Petey will only eat them if I feed them to her one by one, lol. Remi used to like them and now he is not interested.
They are seriously like little kids...

Well we have just changed our brand of seed mix. Our current bag of Safflower Gold was running low, and as I went to reorder I was comparing ingredients. Even the Safflower Gold contains most of the items on my Sunny's personal "Do Not Like" list. So I bought a bag of Kaylor's Sweet Harvest instead. I think this is her permanent seed mix. Half as much in her seed-mix dish seems to make her happy, presumably since she considers it all edible. Also, turns out she really likes the pumpkin seeds. So far, she definitely like this mix best!

(Also I got her a sample of TOPS pellets. She does Not like them one bit. So, pellets are still Harrison's for now.)

I use ZuPreem as well and fortify it with some other things. I notice that Rin picks out the white and black seeds first before he eats anything else. I also see him doing an interesting dance when he doesn't like something. I am still trying different fruits and veggies with him to see what he likes and doesn't like, I guess trial by error!

He is hysterical to watch and makes these little squeaky noises, so he will forever be dubbed "Squeaky Toy"!
