No question lol. I bought Bindi a custom sized wood perch that attaches to both sides of her cage, which she promptly went to work on and created 2 separate and very sharp sticks out of. Her replacement perches just arrived, sigh. New shivs will come soon :)

My goodness, a picture sure does paint a thousand words doesn’t it?!

Little Lilly doesn’t need to make a shiv, she’s a hormonal hot mess right now and is using her laser scalpel of a beak to great effect, usually on me!

Wow!! Maybe I should get that for my two so that they can finally leave the furniture alone.

Something that eludes me. Why so many of you/us buy these perches? Especially for you, being in Washington State! You have a great selection of safe, hardwood trees!

I know...that is pure procrastination on my part . I keep meaning to make perches for them (even keep the hardware from the destroyed ones so that I have it on hand), and keep failing to get to it! I have a wood shop with tools here too....so I really have no excuse :)

LOL! These aren’t perches :) Tori absolutely LOOOOOOOOVES her balsa wood and will throw a little hissy fit if there isn’t a fresh offering waiting for her each morning. I give her pieces of various shapes and sizes so she can have the experience of manipulating them in different ways. She’s been working on the plank for about three weeks now!

Haha, that's awesome, I have a macaw so he doesn't need to make shivs, his beak hurts enough as it is when he chomps, also stepping on his walnut shells is fun too, worse than legos.

OMG-- We literally call my bird's whittling attempts "shivs" at my house. She is very deliberate and makes them the same shape every time. She uses them as tools and can't/refuses to do certain things without them. She also uses them to break out of her cage and she shapes them to the perfect point lol!!!!
She knows what we are saying when we say, "do you need a shiv?"
Thought I was the only one!! haha

If I’m in a rush I head to the local craft shop. I prefer to get it off of Amazon though. https://www.amazon.com/Midwest-Prod...V1NG9SFRJC6&psc=1&refRID=7X6F4S82YV1NG9SFRJC6 This pack has a variety of shapes and sizes included for a decent price.

I just ordered some of this - mine LOVE balsa wood and maybe they’ll leave their perches alone if I add more of this! They have tons of wood bits in their cages, but balsa is an absolute favorite for chewing and not all toys have it :)

This really is a great variety pack. Mine came with various kinds of sticks, some sheets (super thin), some planks ( about 1/4” thick) and a block that I imagine it will take her the better part of 6 months to destroy!

LOL! Glad I’m not the only one who has handfuls of “pointy tools” available should they be needed! Do you think they are trying to tell us something? Like maybe “Dinner better be on time or you’ll get one of these in the back!”

LOL! Mine does the same thing, only hers have a wide, geometric end (almost exactly like a screw-driver).

He may not be making shivs but he can sure destroy things fast. I feel as though this video is relevant enough to the thread and worth sharing. Jacob destroyed a willow wreath in just under 7 minutes.
