There are two Nanday babies. One is bold and friendly, the other wants to greet you but is more standoffish.
I want a friendly confident bird accepting of new things but also independent. Which bird should I pick. Iā€™m actually leaning towards the shyer one but think the outgoing one might be the better, or more obvious choice.

And then there is always the green cheek. What is it about green cheeks that make them so popular? Price? Accessibility? Or that regardless of that...

Thank you

If you can visit the babies, let one of them pick you. Donā€™t worry so much about outgoing vs. Standoffish now.

Green cheeks are popular...well, because theyā€™re the chosen one, is how Iā€™d put it The pyrrhura conures all generally have the same suite of behaviors. Itā€™s like tryin to choose between a blue and gold macaw vs a green wing macaw. Comes down to the individual. Peary conures, crimson bellies conures, green cheeks, not all THAT different. For whatever reason, green cheeks took the lead. Accessibility, perhaps?

Though with green cheeks there is something to be said for the variety of mutations available that you donā€™t find in other species.

That is a hard decision as they are both super cute, I am sure!
Not sure if you should go by their current behavior, that may change once they are in your home. In any case, have fun!

Green cheek babies roll around hang from cage tops and do everything cute to capture your heart! Once they have fou d their human servant they will train you with their beak. But they are a snuggle bird for life, super bold , super funny parrots, other than their alarm call they are quiet for the most part.
I only took care of a foster Nanday who was sick abdhad been mistreated. Was very fteindly but much louder
Good luck can't wait to hear.

Laurasea, thank you for the description of the green cheek. The green cheek would be the simpler choice, them being smaller and quieter and less expensive, more accessible. I think their boldness and nippiness puts me off, and maybe too that they are so popular. I worry about the reported loudness of a Nanday. However my Blue Crowns loudness was never a problem. My Jenday is loud, and can make your ears bleed if on your shoulder, but he doesnā€™t screech just to screech. He just calls when I go in to get him up in the morning. Not until I am in the room already. And when I come home or a visitor arrives.
I found a Dusky-headed that I think may be a good middle ground but the seller wonā€™t close the sale. I donā€™t think she really wants to get rid of him so she wonā€™t commit.

Well you might be tempted by a quaker ;)!!

Iā€™d have a Quaker in an instant but I live in CA where they are illegal. Iā€™m not above smuggling one in but someone told me if I was caught they would take ALL my birds.

A funny story, Iā€™m old, 35 years ago I purchased a Quaker, by a different name, from a pet store. I came home and researched and realized I had a illegal in CA quaker. The funny part is the birds outside heard my Quaker and I had a flock of about 10 Quakers hanging out in my backyard.

It's a Shame about the outdated Quaker laws..... ridiculous .
I don't recommend them for everything because they are very very very smart and social. So they self-destructive if not giving a lot of attention and activities, and exercise. They like to be vocal.
They are the most given up parrot near me :( :( on the right home they are amazing!

I'd love if that happened to me! I did see the wild new York Quakers in the snow once was really cool!

What about a Queen of Bavaria conure?

I live in a rural area and never ever have I ever seen or heard of a Queen of Bavaria within 1,000 miles of me. I am limited to what is accessible to me. I wonā€™t order a bird through a breeder.

Ahhhh I am so back and forth. I need a bird like I need a hole in my head. I love the larger size and potential to talk Nanday but think my life may be less complicated with a smaller quieter green cheek. Cheaper to buy, I already have appropriate several cages that could House a green cheek. I donā€™t suppose one bird species is more likely to be friends with Jazz over the other. Unless Aratinga to Aratinga. I can get a third hand young rescue green cheek with cage for $200, that actually needs saving. Or a Petco $550 baby Nanda (toys and cages will be more expensive) Or a 5 month old from the breeder $300 green cheek, or $450 black capped. Or continue to wait for whatā€™s already been 2 months to be approved by a rescue group that is a day or more drive away.
Sorry Iā€™m thinking out loud.

The nanday wonā€™t be much worse than your Jenday. Of the aratingas, itā€™s the sun conure with the screeching reputation concern. If youre confortable with your jenday, go with the nanday.

If you just want something different, go with the green cheeks.

Take the screaming out of it. Not a concern for you :)

I'm all about taking in rehomes!!!!! Sounds like that GCC needs someone with experience if it's been re-homed three times ! My parakeets were given to me, my Pikachu was re-homed to me, my Penny I had to rescue from terrible situation.
GCC don't just bite for no reason, they are very willing to bite for sure! But they bite because you didn't read their body language, you did something wrong, they bite to discipline and correct you. They love you like crazy, they just believe in the stick ( beak) lol it's for your own good. And they ar fearless!!!! They won't back down ever!!!!
This rehoming GCC, probably has developed a fear of hands, in that case they will run up and bite hsnds. I caused this in my GCC by accident and had to earn back her trust.
GCC want to be with you , want affection.

Well the decision has been made. Laurasea, the little green cheek in need of a rescue already found a home. So...
My Jenday Jazz is having a hard time with bedtime. I only had one room for quarantine, which is Jazzā€™s bedroom and night cage. Jazz is in the LR and had a bit of trouble falling asleep. Next week she will have a new night cage and can sleep in my room until the quarantine is over.
Next step, itā€™s Halloween so what to name, Jet? Salem? Raven? Luna? Jinx?

I've had a total of 3 GCC. 2 were reserved and quiet, one completely over the top. Although over the top is beyond entertaining and makes you smile, I'll stick with my slow and steadies given the choice, it's just so much easier for the long haul....

A petstore near me had (maybe still does have, not sure) a beautiful Nanday. With the black head and beautiful green body, and gravelly caw-sounding voice, it looked like a raven had climbed out from a can of green paint. A Raven that had Gone Green! I figured if it were mine ((not a chance, btw)), I would've named it "Evermore."
