Fuzzy Hut

Do anyone know why Fuzzy Huts are not good for Conure? Please someone help me understand the reason why is not good or safe for them. Thanks

In addition to above, conures are habitual chewers. They’ll chew and swallow the threads, which is a death sentence.

And if you're still not convinced, the following is an excerpt from another parrot welfare website...

"My 1-1/2 year old Timneh grey has always slept on top of a happy hut; it gave him better balance. Yesterday morning, I found him hanging upside down with his foot twisted in threads from this item, an item so new it hadn’t even been washed yet. In attempting to free himself before I found him at 7AM, he had chewed off a large portion of his foot and two toes. He spent 2 hours in surgery and required 50 stitches to have his foot repaired as well as possible. We won’t know for some time if the remaining toe and the remnants of one other toe will survive. Needless to say, I will never use this product again.”

But wait there's more...

“Just a word of warning to all bird owners, PLEASE re-consider getting any type of [parrot tents] for your birds (especially Conures, as they love to chew on them). I nearly lost my beloved jenday today in one of them (the soft, fleecy type). Her foot became caught up in the newly chewed threads, on the floor of it, and had twisted among some of the threads, and then she panicked, and got her whole head and torso caught under just a couple of the threads. I grabbed the scissors right away, and immediately cut her free, and was able to save her. She’s fine, no harm done. Actually, I was worse off than she! Permanent end to that hut in her cage! But…. was not so lucky last year, when my mom lost her dear conure to a very similar accident with one of those huts, it was one of the stiffer types of these things, that have red and blue cloth, over cardboard. She had chewed around on the front part of the hut, along the edge, and was going after that “one thread more”, when her head became entangled between the threads on the fabric, and the cardboard, and she strangled to death. She died instantly, despite our quick efforts to save her.”

They can cause also death from ingesting the synthetic microfibres which build up in and block the gastro-intestinal tract. It's just not worth the risk.

Just as @1oldparroter mentioned, confined, dark spaces do make quite a difference in hormonal behavior. We originally had a little corner PVC tube for our sun conure, and he would hiss and lunge from it. It lasted about three days before we removed it. Haven’t had any hissing or lunging since.

All fuzzy huts are bad news, I reckon, if we get all the members here on the Parrot Forum into a petition, we can put a end to these things and get rid of them on the pet market
