Pearly Conure sudden death

Earlier this morning before I left for work when I went to check on my two birds (living in separate cages) I saw my pearly green cheek conure Lucky at the bottom of his cage. He did this normally when he was a baby while he slept but I quickly realized that this time it was different and that he was dead. Currently writing this in tears as I have no idea how he could have died. The only hints I could have noticed beforehand was the regurgitation he would sometimes do for the last couple months but after becoming worried about it a while ago I did a google search to find that it was normal. Lucky was about 3 years old which is extremely young. I can't help but be flooded with feelings of irresponsibility and regret that I couldn't have given him the best life he could have had. He spent a lot of time in his cage each day as I work long shifts. He was a very clingy bird and loved me more than he loved himself. He would give me warm cuddles whenever I needed them. I feel like such a horrible owner for not giving him all the attention I should have. If anyone can help me reach some sort of conclusion on his death it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

So sorry for you sudden loss!!! Oh my heart goes out to you!!

Birds hide being sick. Evolved that way.

My story is the same. I list my GCC of 17 years. I fed her treats went outside fr two hours came back dhewss gone. No sign of anything! But dhehad a history of sinus infection, her last had been six years prior. But that was what got her. ... Never fuffed, always ate great played...

So many other people have the same story. I wish the birds would let us know they've sick!!!!

Anyway all my love

I am sorry for your loss.
Sometimes there is just no way to know there is anything wrong.

I lost my little Pinky a few months ago. my son was feeding them a she flapped and landed face down in the bottom of the cage. I picked her up right away and she was still warm. Heart attack is my best guess but not knowing how old she was noting to be done.

You can have a necropsy done if you want answers. keep her body in the refrigerator NOT the freezer.

I'm so sorry for your loss of Lucky. I lost a precious little green cheeked baby called Baci back in 2018 who was everything to me. At only 5 years old it just never occurred to me that I would lose him. Yet he contracted pancreatitis and started showing symptoms over a weekend when his regular vet was closed. We took him to a non-bird vet who had a look at him and couldn’t see anything wrong but suggested we take him to his usual vet first thing Monday, which we fully intended to do anyway. By that time however he was becoming ataxic and much more ill. My bird vet is extremely good and I left him there fairly confident that Baci would be ok. My husband had to take an interstate trip for work so I was left by myself in the house waiting for news from the vet. As the hours dragged on i got a feeling in my gut that Baci wasn’t going to make it. The vet called the next morning to say he had died in the night, in the clinic all alone, probably wondering where I was. I’ve never been so heartbroken and devastated in my life.

I still desperately miss my baby Baci and I always will. Like you I was working long shifts at the time and will always wonder if I might have seen something sooner if I'd spent more time at home with him. Many of us have suffered this kind of loss and understand only too well how the pain and torment of all the “what if’s?” and “if only’s” that linger on. The sharp pain of loss will lessen over time though and I'm sure Lucky would not want you to punish yourself over this. You gave him a wonderful home and more love in his short life than many others would get in decades.

Godspeed over the Rainbow Bridge Lucky, until we meet you again :smile015:

Sending thoughts your way. As mentioned, you could have a necropsy done to determine cause of death.

I had two zebra finches when I was in elementary school. One day, I came home to both dead on the bottom of the cage. My mother said my cat got to the cage and scared them to death. I assume cardiac arrest was the cause of death, but it didn’t hurt any less. You may not have been able to do anything to prevent this outcome, but it doesn’t diminish the suffering. Best wishes for you.

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
My deepest condolences for your loss of Lucky. I hope his wonderful memories give comfort as you grieve.

Wonderful advice above, a necropsy by certified avian vet may grant you some understanding.

It feels like your heart is breaking. It doesn't matter how many times it happens it always feels the same. The first time is the worst because you feel like you will never recover, but trust that you will and that given time you will start to focus on the happy times and remember the beautiful relationship that you both enjoyed. I say both because deep in your heart you know that you gave this little one the best you had. The love you shared was and still is real. Focus on your other bird who might be feeling just like you and wondering what has happened to his friend. Take your time and I promise it will pass. You will always remember but with a sad happiness rather than the deep grief you feel now. Take care.

Very sorry for your loss!

When our feathered loved ones pass, we are commonly left with why, what happened, what could I have done different. In addition, those around us rarely understand the deep emotional attachment we have for our feathered Loved ones.

Know that here you will find individuals that understand that emotional connect...

Huge, warm Amazon Feather Hugs dear friend...
