My conure prefers my dad over me

Green cheek conure
Cockatiel
Hello! I have taken in a green cheek conure named Romeo 3 weeks ago. He's a goofball and a sweetheart honestly, and he has adapted fast, caring for all members of the family.

The thing is he clearly has a preference for my dad. He doesn't bite or anything but if my dad's in the room he prefers to hang out with him. When my dad is out he prefers being with me, which makes sense since I'm the one who takes care of everything and spends more time with him. I just feel it's a bit unfair since my dad didn't even want a bird in the first place and almost doesn't pay romeo any attention

Can I do anything do deepen the bond I have with romeo and make him see me as his chosen one? Any advice helps!

Green cheek conure - Sydney (Syd) Hatched 2/2017
I feel your pain but it is a sad truth that parrots have a mind of their own. It is very early days and you don't say how old he is and I think the only thing you can do is make his time with you enjoyable. Talk to him, do training with him as time goes on. Most of all hang around a while because there is a huge amount of information and experience here. Well done for finding us, someone with more experience than me will help you out soon.

It’s quite common for green cheek conures to have a favoured human, even when that human wasn’t crazy about getting a bird to begin with. Cats do it too, I’ve seen cats wander through a roomful of people until it homes in on the one person who HATES cats, hop onto their lap and demand a cuddle!

My cockatiel Fang is similar in that he LOVES my husband and really only wants to know me if I’ve got food or he wants a scratch (I’ve got the fingernails for it!) Loyalties are not necessarily set in concrete however so keep yourself in Romeo’s good graces by continuing to be the only source of the yummiest treats and the funnest times :)
