So a few weeks ago a got a new baby BCC and after being quarantined I've begun introducing her to my flock. She's in a cage next to them, I thought it would be a bit crazy for her but she doesn't seem overwhelmed at all and is now friends with my other BCC.

I have her out on her own letting her bond with me and get used to her new home and she landed on my Hahns macaw's cage (the side not top, top is covered). He proceeded to go for her feet, I got her off as quick as I could but he has obviously hurt her - she didn't scream which I thought was unusual - but she is now limping. There was no blood and not much to see, there's a small tear on the top of her foot but no obvious deformation.

It's been 24 hours and she's still not really putting weight on it, she can't hop so she is technically 'putting weight on it' but not really.

Normally I would have gone to the vet this morning but obviously in the current climate I can't just run off to the vet. My usual avian vet is doing consultations but a member of my family is showing symptoms of COVID-19 and I think it would be wrong for me to potentially spread anything I may be carrying, they're doing a limited number of phone consultations but I haven't yet managed to get through.

To go through her behaviours again:
-limping quite bad
-no blood
-no visual deformation
-lets me touch her toes without biting or anything (which she is not opposed to doing!)
-is eating, drinking and bathing everyday

I think she's broken one of her toes, but I have no idea! She doesn't look in pain but I've heard birds are very good at hiding this, and I hate to think she is in pain.

Any advice?! I know it should be vet trip but I'll need to be careful, anyone have any idea how much this costs? It's not a factor on going or not but it's the end of the month and I don't have loads of money so I'll have to go into my savings (which is completely fine)

Thank you

Hey I'm in the uk to, vets are open for emergency or urgent appointments, if you can ring them and see what they advise you to do.

If you explain family are showing potential symptoms they may tell you to wait in the car and they will come and get your bird while they are in their personal protection equiptment, or they may ask you to gett a friend to bring the bird down and do a telephone Co sukt with you.

As for cost, the vet I worked in charged ÂŁ35 for a consultation and then what ever else on top of that. But please make sure that they are experienced in treating parrots.

I hope this helps.

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Sorry to hear your BCC has a foot injury. Completely agree with your assessment and reluctance to potentially spread COVID-19.

Telephone consult seems appropriate, and I'm not sure how a vet would treat a broken toe without visible deformity. Perhaps prescribe a course of pain med such as Meloxicam? A very difficult dilemma overall, hope your baby recovers fully and comfortably.

Just an update, took her to the vets who said she’s broken her foot (where the foot attached to the leg).
He’s told me to keep her from climbing/flying for several weeks and given me antibiotics and anti-inflamatories. I’m setting her up a fish tank so she can’t climb. Hopefully she’ll be better soon!

That's brilliant news that you were able to get her to a vets. She will feel much more comfortable with the pain relief.

Give her some head scritches from me and albie. And we hope shes on the mend soon.

Glad you were able to take her to a vet. Hope she heals well and remains comfortable. Bird bones heal relatively quickly.

So I’m minimising her movement as much as I can. She’s taking her meds really well and being a really good little patient expect that she won’t stop wondering around! The tank she’s in isn’t giant so she can’t move around loads but I’m genuinely so worried that she won’t heal if she keeps moving! She’s only young and very tame so whenever she sees me she tries climbing the sides to get to me!

Any tips on keeping her still? Do you think she’ll heal anyway?? Do you think she’ll limp for a while? Vet wants me to bring her back Monday as he’s got some probiotic to put in her water to help reduce her stress.

Thanks for support :)

Try to spend as much time with her calming her down as possible. She might relax more if she is with you.

Sometimes as humans we have to do our best and trust that what is meant to happen will. It’s not really possible to relay to an animal that they need to be calm and still, we can only do our best and encourage stillness and calmness. It will be ok, I’m sure. Just take it one day at a time.
