Red and Brown Feces?

I got my sun conure 2 months ago, and he is about 18-23 weeks. Just today, I noticed that his feces is brown with a red liquid. I had him out with me in my room for about an hour and a half, and in the same 5 minute time frame, he went twice, both of the feces looking the same. I started changing his diet a couple days ago, and mixed the old food with the new food. His new diet is "Seed and Pellet Medley" by the brand All Living Things.

Should I be concerned about this? I attached both a picture of his feces and his brand of food. I'm very worried about him, even though he is acting normal.

Was the color abrupt with the addition of the All Living Things food?

Aside from the question you’ve asked, I’d suggest opting for a higher quality food in general, Zupreem, Roudybush, Harrison’s, etc.

Yes, this just happened as I changed his diet. I will definitely look into a higher quality food brand, this is my first time owning a conure. Thank you for the advice and your quick reply.

I would -assume- it’s the dye in those red pellets. Remove the seed starting ASAP and see if it goes back to normal in a day or two. Otherwise, I’d be heading to the vet.

And, no problem! There’s so much on the market for bird food it can be hard to know where to start. I’m brand new to conures myself. I just brought mine home yesterday [emoji4] I had a similar issue to what you’re having, though, with my parrotlet several years ago.

Diet can certainly cause abrupt changes in fecal appearance. Have you given any produce? Some things, especially berries, can cause very noticeable stool changes! But as Lollipoppy suggested, keep checking, and if it doesn’t seem to improve/change, make a vet appointment. Many are doing tele-vet visits right now!

I agree that you should try for a higher quality pellet, though. As a general guide, conures should have something like 70% veggie chop, 20% fruit, and 10% seeds and treats. I’ve seen slight variations on the ratios as well, so it’s not necessarily a hard rule. You can also sprout seeds, which makes them significantly more nutritious, to offer instead of dry seeds.

I absolutely love all living things oven baked pellets, they have great ingredients a d my parrots love them. The oven baked bites don't have any color added. I haven't seen the seed mix pellets mix that you show.

Did you feed any fruit? The fruit wo make the poops look like that.

I remember the first time I fed mixed berries (raspberry, blackberry, and blueberry). Not only did my hands look like a murder scene, but the poop was so concerning [emoji81] definitely a scare, sometimes!

Thanks to everyone for their replies :) I stopped feeding him the new food ASAP and his feces went back to normal. I bought him Zupreme Fruit Blend
