Green cheek conure - Sydney (Syd) Hatched 2/2017
Syd has slept a lot since he got up this morning. He seemed ok yesterday and has had his usual 12.5 hours in a covered sleep cage in a quiet room. He is generally quieter than usual. He has chatted a bit, done some target training as usual, is eating and drinking and his poo is ok but he is very quiet and as I type he is asleep on my shoulder.

Unless I make a point of interacting with him he falls asleep today, and I don't know if it's my imagination but he seems a little warmer than usual, against my neck.

Any thoughts?

That is a tough one - he could just be tired, or he could be not feeling well. I tend to pay close attention when something seems “off”, since they do hide illness so well. I would probably give his vet a call and get an opinion, since I tend to be a worrier. Hopefully he’s just having a tired day!

He slept a lot this morning but this afternoon he seems to have perked up. Not as bright and bubbly as usual but he had a bath (I thought it might cool him down if he really was hot), and he played for a while. Each night he tears up all the paper at the bottom of his sleep cage. He doesn't do it in the day at all but at night he seems to have got into a habit. I wonder if he is keeping himself awake doing that. Tonight I won't have newspaper in and see if it makes a difference. It won't upset him dramatically will it? Will it matter if it does?

How is his weight been? Weight is a key way to monitor parrot health, and in little guys like conures dropping 10 grams or so in a short space would be troubling. Is he off his average daily weight?

Thank you for that promp. He is a fraction up if anything, but about the same as usual.

Well this morning Syd got up bright eyed and sparkling. Newspaper in the bottom of his sleep cage was omitted and I guess not having a night shift job of ripping it all up meant he slept instead. I shall continue this way for now. I guess he just really likes reading in bed!

I love it - good to know that night time entertainment may be contributing :).
