Good morning everyone. I decided to start a new thread so that it doesn’t seem like there is an emergency now. I hope you all had a great Fourth of July.

This morning Kylo is up and moving all around her shelter, trying to fly and climb out. She is flock calling and doing that little conure chirp. She ate like crazy last night and this morning by herself. She only took a couple of ml of handfeeding formula this morning though. She is at 62 grams, so her weight is a little down, but not to be concerned about.

We definitely see much more movement and attempts at control with her feet. She is no longer laying on her side or back, and is trying to stay up on her feet with them close together in front of her. It appears there is definitely some recovery continuing in that area.

We definitely see that she does not have voluntary motor control of her vent or tail yet. When she walks or tries to perch it is obvious it makes her off balance. We will continue her treatment. When she chirps and flock calls her vent opens involuntarily, usually resulting in her pooping.

She still appears to be a happy little girl and not showing any outward signs of pain. She is fighting through it and definitely a strong soul.

Aaww. This is sad and encouraging both at the same time. I really hope she continues to improve.

While we know it’s sad she may never be exactly the same, it’s a million times better then when this all first started. And through all of it she has not been biting or nippy, just using her beak to hold on when she is insecure. She is a super sweet baby and we will do all we can for her.

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Wonderful idea for dedicated recovery thread! Kylo's uneven recovery pace may be a further clue for the vet, seems her feet are improving ahead of tail and vent. That her spirits are high is remarkable and no doubt in part due to loving care. Love to see continual pics and reports!!

Young brains like Kylo's have amazing neuroplasticity and abilities to form new neural connections and ways to cope with injury or incapacity. Even if she never fully recovers she should be able to deal with her "new normal" and live a great quality of life with the support of your dedication and love. I suspect she has stolen more than a few hearts during the last week or so ... :)

Thank you eve tone for understanding and support. We let Kylo and her sister Nemo spend a little time together after the last handfeeding. She is definitely so lively, compared to the first day.

Here is a video for you all to see.

I was being super gentle with both of them. We actually are having a hard time getting Kylo to remain calm.

So gratifying to see Kylo continuously improving. Having Nemo nearby and involved likely beneficial.

We spoke to Dr. Brooks office this morning and updated them on Kylo’s progress. They have told us to continue the current treatment plan for another 3-5 days with the metacam. They feel her progress is significant and there is no need to alter the course at this time.

She is alert and super playful today even though we are trying to keep her calm and relaxed.

She is doing just as well today as yesterday. She still doesn’t appear to have voluntary motor control of her vent or her tail. But she is continuing to want to be out of her shelter, trying to jump and fly out of it. I think she is lonely because she always had her sister with her. I have been putting her in a soft microfiber towel and trying to get her to stay still which seems to work in calming her down.

Her weight is still good and she eats both the handfeeding mix and her pellets. We also have a spray of millet in with her since she likes it a lot and it seems slightly easier for her to eat. She eats her pellets too though, so maybe we are spoiling her.

I’ll take a video when I give her the afternoon medicine and feeding.

Here she is just after her medicine and afternoon hand feeding. She still is taking from the syringe anywhere from 2-6ml depending on how much she is eating of her pellets and millet. She is weaned but we want to maintain her weight.

Thank you everyone who has wished us well. Let’s keep hoping she continues to improve.

Basil, my 22 year old male SI eclectus can be heard several times in the background. He’s upstairs on his tree stand.

So, I have a question for anyone who is a veterinarian or associated with them. We noticed tonight that while her tail and vent are lame, when she chirps and flock calls, her tail goes up and down. This means there is still some type of motor / muscle control, right ? This is a good sign that she has still some nerves that are working ? Just looking to see if we are being too hopeful.

When you say her vent is "lame", you mean that she lacks sensation? She is still defecating independently, correct?
