Hey y’all, we’re looking at taking Milo camping & also having just a small cage for travel. I can’t afford the $160+ price tag of the wrought iron ones, but found this one for $30 used. I was wondering if it would work for a few days at a time? 3 days most, maaaaybe 4.

By the way Milo is a GCC! He’s not a cage chewer (that I’ve seen and I’m with him most of the day.)

TIA!

Umbrella Cockatoo- 15? years old..I think?
It could, work but b/c it is used, you would need to disinfect it like crazy and get him used to it ahead of time

...bleach can't be used in the house but it can also leave behind chemical residue on the cage and on your skin (as can other non-avian-safe cleaners), so one solution is to let the cage sit in the sun after bleaching with an appropriate mixture of water+bleach and rinsing thoroughly (because the UV light will break down some of that chemical stuff that is left over, as long as the ratio isn't excessive, as long as you rinse/wash and as long as it sits in full sun for a few days) AND WEAR GLOVES.

The issue is, if you leave it outside for many days (as required) risk wild birds making it dirty again via poop etc. I am always nervous about buying used cages because some diseases are really hard to kill and it can be impossible for someone to tell whether a seemingly healthy bird has them without testing...but people DO buy used cages from time-to-time-- you just have to make sure that you know how to clean it... FYI bleach doesn't kill everything (at any strength) and MORE bleach can actually be less effective in some cases, depending on what you are trying to kill (so there is that issue too)..

On top of a solid and safe disinfectant plan, you also want to scrub etc....and do not re-use anything porous. Also-- certain cleaners (like bleach) lose their efficacy day by day after opening and within 24 hours of mixing with water-- so if you use bleach (with extreme caution, not in the house, with rinsing, at a good ratio, +sunlight) then make sure it is brand new.

Will you be camping in a tent or RV?

The cage size is fine. A little shallow but should be okay for temporary purposes. I am always afraid of used cages. I would bleach and rinse after several times and leave outside in sun to kill off any residue and fumes.

You can also look for an inexpensive wire cage. We got a cockatiel cage locally for when we bring our birds to vet or groomer.

Is your bird clipped ?

If you decide to go with a new cage

I have two of these:
https://prevuepet.com/product/788/square-top--green-91321

I use them as sleeping cages and have used them as Travel and Transport cages. They are a nice size for my Sun (ever-so-slightly larger than your bird), and should be a good fit for yours as well.

You should be able to find just the cage and not the whole kit. It Will be More than $30 but you should still be able to find it at a reasonable cost. There are other, prettier cages, but I love the large door for access.

((These folks near me always have good prices on everything: https://www.statelinepetsupply.com/ -- However their stock varies and right now their website only shows the larger (less-convenient-for-travel) flight cage versions. ))

Thank you everyone, I ended up finding one brand new & on sale... it’s the smaller vision cage but it’s only for short term & he’ll be inside a trailer so I can take him out and exercise him every day for the few days will be away. I can’t upload him exploring the new cage on this browser, but he seems to be having fun!
