Hello All,

It has been long time since i've posted in this community and since we had a little buddy (a bird) in our house.

Life has been very busy , moving from one city to another, new house, new work, etc, but, in the end we decided (about a week ago) to buy a Sun Conure.

Little boy/girl is about 5 weeks old, still with the breeder , and i am expecting it will be joining us in about 4 weeks or so.
It will be DNAd, as well as it will get 2 shots from vet 5 weeks and 7 weeks old by known vet here in the city + we will take it for another checkup (should we?).

Right now we are looking into getting a cage for it, toys and deciding for the best food to get / purchase for the new member of the family.

Cages i am looking into right now are:
http://ca-en.hagen.com/Bird/Housing/Wire-Cages/B7277
or
https://kingscages.com/product/new-locks-8002422play-pen-bird-cage24w-x-22d-x-63h/

(I am in Canada, both cages are around $550-650 (+tax)).

Any thoughts? Recommendations? Suggestions?

Thank you :)

Regarding bring your new family member home. Please ensure that s/he is fully weaned and has been on solid food for at least two weeks. Even with that you may find that your baby may want to be feed soft food, so assure that the Breeder provides you a week's worth of what they weaned s/he off of.

Assure that the cage you choose has a full front door, top to bottom as it provides you much greater room to clean, change out food and water, and more your Parrot in and out of the cage. Like the play tops.

And, yes, taking your new member to see the Avian Vet is a great idea as it provides you a medical baseline for any and all future visits. Please remember to provide a copy of all documents provided by the Breeder, so it become part of your Parrots medical file.

Welcome back!!!

Hello,

Thank you for responding. After talking to a breeder, i was advised that the bird will be on solid food for a week / week and a half before we can take it, but, i will check about the food that was used before solid food, thanks for this information, definitely very useful.

As for the cages, both of the cages i listed here have full size door, just unsure if the size will be good ( single bird ), wire spacing and quality.

Did some research on both of these brands, appears that King's cage is better quality ( its $100 more / i dont mind spending it ).

Would appreciate if someone can help us decide about the cage, as i think we will need to order it due to Covid, there might be shipping delays.

Thanks

Aside from getting the bigest one you can afford and fit, and 'Boats notes above, make sure the bar spacing is appropriate for your Sunny. I would think 5/8 or 3/4" at the most, dont want the little head to get stuck thru the bars. I personally dont like the dome tops that open up, to often they can close with tragic results. play tops ( flat) are better, except if your Sunny starts with the height dominance thing. I know my 'zon Salty is impossible to get off the top when he is in his King of the World mood.

Thank you for responding and providing useful information.

At first we were thinking about getting the cage with no playtop, however after doing some re-search, etc. its a must now, but, with flat playtop as you said, for sure.

Thank you all again for all help / suggestions.

If any1 else has any other ideas / suggestions to help us do everything properly, please let us know :)

Thanks

Jonesy a Goffins 'Too who had to be rehomed :-(

And a Normal Grey Cockatiel named BB who came home with me on 5/20/2016.
Amy's "house" is similar to the King's you posted ( flat top with perch with ladders). He and The Beebs (cockatiel) spend lots of time on the play gym. I especially like the "doors" four of them, two on either side for food, water, treats, that swing out so you need not open the front door to remove a bowl, after all...it's HIS house and he doesn't like trespassers! (chomp!)

Don't forget to post pictures of s/he! Did the breeder send you any?? ( hint hint) ;)

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Welcome back, congratulations for your Sun Conure! Beautiful bird!!

I have several of the King's cages as linked, you'll find them durable and user friendly. Agree with the viewpoints suggesting play-top. I have one dome-top cage remaining, it has been modified to permanently closed status with stainless steel wire placed strategically.

Thank you Scott.

I wish that we could get bigger cage then: Aprox 24″ Wide, 22″ Deep, 63″ High , but, at this time and in current house, this would be the best size, so, we can fit it properly.

I am just afraid it won't be small for the bird, as i would say Sunny's are bigger then other conure we used to have before (green cheek).

Thanks

Phoenix - Sun conure
I got Phoenix from a local Bird only store. We picked each other when he was ten weeks old. I wasn't allowed to bring him home till 15/16 weeks old. I did get to come see him whenever the store was open to help build the bond before going home. If you can arrange visits when it gets a bit older to get some bonding in to make the move from breeder to your home smother.
I would not rush this part at all. Bringing home a partialy weaned bird, or too soon after weaning can be a major issue.
Just saying don't rush this part, you have 30 years of time to spend with your feathered kid.

Thank you for providing this information.

The issue now is Covid, all pets stores are closed and only possibility is curb pickup at this time, however, this might change by the time its ready for pickup, and if it does change, we will go and try to spend as much as possible time together.

I already discussed this with my wife, this is indeed our concern.

If we get no chance to see the bird before pickup time, we will bring it home and take it easy, probably have it always around us, let it walk, explore and slowly try to get close to him/her.

If you have any other suggestions for this worst case scenario, please advise.

Thanks

So, We are 'back' [emoji3]

We had a River, our turquoise GCC in an A&E cage that measures about 24x23x63. It is huge for a conure. Since we moved the rest of the flock together they are now in a 32x24x63 H Q cage. Both are working out very well, but even the new cage is huge for four conures (3 GCC, 1 black capped). There were five but alas we lost Kylo, one of black capped babies.

My male eclectus is in an acrylic cage that is 48x24x36. It is getting old though and the acrylic is brittle now. So I am trying to decide what to get for him.

Bandit, our caique baby boy just moved into River’s old A & E cage. Seems like it would be small but caique is not really that big. And all the birds are spoiled and out of there cages for many hours a day.
