Booby-Sun Conure
Hello everyone,
Our bird is a sun conure that flew onto our terrace one day in September. Dont know if its a he or she and he doesnt have a band. We are taking him to the vet soon.

My question is can they get too attached? He tries to nip me in the mouth all the time. Is this normal? And he loves to be on my shoulder and chest. I'm nervous about him nipping at my face.

Also he does not like water. I bought him a bird bath but he wont use it. He will go with me in the shower but will perch on the shower rod lol 😆

His name is Booby and he is a smart bird. Unfortunately i dont know how old he is i try to do some training with him
He seems receptive to it but he will not go into the cage willingly.

Any advice would be appreciated thanks!:orange:

Welcome and be welcomed. Have you tried to find the owner? Loosing a parrot is a lot like loosing a child and the owner could be earching for him.

Have you had a parrot before? There are many many adjustments people have tp make in their life styles in order to give a parrot a safe, happy home. Here are a few

Big cage
natural branch perches of non toxic woods
diet of pellets , fresh veggies and small amount of fruit and a tiny amount of seeds (for training)
NO TEFLON or ANYTHING LIKE IT - the fumes from it are toxic to birds-the list of things that have teflon in htem is huge, besides cooking ware. Heaters, irons, hair dryers, crockpots, ricemakers, and so on.
No perfume, air fressheners, scented candles or cleaning agents that are toxic
12 hrs a nite dark quiet sleep
4 hrs min a day out of cage and interaction with people, 6-8 hrs is better.
Fresh water at all times
Bath regularly , can be dish or try a mist from a clean washed out spray bottle
Vet vist to a certified avian vet, dog and cat vets are useless when it comes to parrots
Toys - tons of them, and they get destroyed quickly. Size appropriate- no macaw sized toys
PLay stand or area with yet more toys and things to keep them occupied.
PATIENCE - parrot change but very very slowly, so mipping and screeching and stuff takes weeks/months/ years to change andrequires everyone in the hous to be on board with th techniques.

And these are the things off hand you shold provide to him. Oh yes and be prepared to do this for 20-30 years becasue this sun conure could easily live that long.

Parrot ownership is not something to be taken lightly, these are very smart, very emotional creatures, much like 2 yar old human babies, that never grow up and have a can opener on their faces.

As the owner of a lost quaker parrot, I hsve been desperate to find him. Completely broken hearted. Its a very special abd unique bond of a person to their parrot. Im sure the owner is desperate to get them back. Besides face book and humane society.
You can add use parrot 911 alert

Many parrots have to have the leg band removed. But the owner will have posted about their lost love, and the reaction of the parrot to their person is unmistakable , and picture will show subtle differences between same species.
I beg you to do ever possible to find their family

With parrots you can never have too big a cage. If you intend on keeping this little fellow, 24" x 36" x 40 would be ideal, or larger. make sure the bar spacing is appropriate for a sun conure, so his haed cant get stuck between the bars. Say 3/4" bar spacing max, 5/8" better.

Thank you sooo much for trying to find their person! They are usually found within 10 miles of where they were lost.. and within 3 months of being lost ( an average) the Next Door App, many people list their lost pets on this app. We love them like they are our kids, that's why we say fids( feathered kids) and say we are parronts( parrot parents) on behalf of my lost love thank you

I like the cages that are 32 inches in length or longer, 2o inches deep or more , and the cafe part nit the stand is about 36 inches high..i like the stands that make the total high 60-63 inches high.

This is a great article, not saying your parrot is stressed, it just covers so many great things
https://lafeber.com/pet-birds/stress-reduction-for-parrot-companions/

This is a great article, starts with normal behavior, then goes to problem behavior like bites.
https://lafeber.com/pet-birds/bird-behavior/

It takes a while to earn a burds trust, and tgey can bute because they saw a hawk out the window, or if you have a dog or something spooks it, amoung other things. As you gang trust snd learn to read body language, bites are usually rare.

For baths I just use a brownie size glass casserole dish add an inch if water and really splash with your hand they can't resist that most times...

Diet is really important, lots of fresh vegetables, leafy lettuces, and berries and some fruits. Offering on a plate ir big shallow dish helps. Pepper like red chili peppers ate well liked and ha e a good amount of vitamin A, broccoli, zucchini, cucumber, Brussels sprouts, green beans, thawed peas, cauliflower, carrots, there is a huge list of safe foods. Pomegranate, strawberries, cranberry ( fresh), blueberries, plums, ...dandelion greens from grocery store, romaine, Spinach, bok choy, i buy bags of human salad mix with broccoli straw, and Brussels sprouts starw...

Unsafe food never to give are onion, mushrooms, avocado..

Fumes from non stick cookware , baking sheets , air fryers can kill burds anywhere in a house even several floors away and behind a closed door

That article covers the hidden dangers that will kill burds in seconds!!

Its horrible, and we have people share these awful deaths all the time with us...

So please read
Excerpt:
" Hidden nonstick surfaces are a major concern. Many newer appliances, such as ovens and space heaters, contain nonstick surfaces. Obviously, a space heater can reach extremely high temperatures, possibly releasing PTFE fumes that have been proven deadly to birds. Many manufacturers are unaware of this danger or do not have documentation on their products to warn you about the presence of Teflon or other nonstick surfaces. If you are in doubt, do not use these items in rooms with birds. If you are worried that your house tends to be cold in the winter and you are using these heaters to warm your birds, this is most likely completely unnecessary. I know breeders of macaws who live close to the mountains in Southern California. They say the birds thrive even at temperatures near freezing. As long as the birds are not wet or near drafts, they will do fine.

What is a draft? A draft is different from just cold air. You could think of it as a “thread” of cool air. It cuts a path of sorts through warmer air. This is what is hard on birds. Their body has adjusted to the room’s temperature, but they end up in the path of one of these threads of significantly colder air. If your bird is near a window, that window should be well insulated. To check it, hold your hand around the edges of the glass to feel for any “threads” of cooler air. Do this a number of times, particularly when it is windy outside, to make sure you haven’t missed a drafty spot.
Another hidden source of nonstick material are cooking bags. There have been a number of reported incidents with these bags. They reach extremely high temperatures. Manufacturers often will not reveal the makeup of these bags, claiming it is proprietary information. I personally do not use these bags. If you feel you must, temporarily remove birds from the immediate area and put them in a room that does not share vents with the kitchen. "

Thank you for posting on 911 alert, I searched and didn't see a lost sun either. Its sad all these found parrot, but the owners don't know about the site, and then the long list lost list and maybe the people who found didn't know about parrot 911. I do love the stories of parrots and people reunited!

Parrots who first escape often fly as high as they can to the tallest tree , or balcony , it seems an instinctive response to fear. Perhaps they are lost from a building across from you, near by or even your building.

I'm glad you could help.
