Hi everyone. I just brought home my new sun conure yesterday (friday) and it had occurred to me I didnt even have a name picked out for it. I was considering Jojo or Bailey but neither seems to fit the bird much. I'm open to any suggestions. My family keeps making the mistake of calling it Linius and I really dont want that name to stick. I'll admit it tho, he looks alot like Linius. Also I'm not sure but I think the bird keeps begging me to feed it. I mean like how you hand feed babies. When I put my hand out he makes this really soft/fast begging noise. I'll offer him some apples (since he's used to those) and he'll eat them just fine but I wonder why he is begging me to feed him as if he was still being hand fed. Oh and as an additional note he has been eating on his own for two weeks and it about three month old. Here are some pics

How old is he? Do you know the last time he was fed formula?

I've always offered my babies food for as long as they are asking/willing to take it.

Very cute pics!

To MerlinsMom: I'm not sure if its a boy or girl yet. We are planning to get it DNA'd soon. I really dont mind either tho since its such a sweet bird :)

To Ralstonka: S/he's three months old and has been eating on his/her own for two weeks. The guy I got him/her from has been breeding for 15 years and wanted to make sure it would eat on its own before he sold him/her. He stopped giving formula as soon as they started eating on their own. I'm not sure about this but I've read that sometimes birds will beg to be fed because its easier that way. Do you know if there is any truth to this? S/he is perfectly capable of eating on his/her own.

I still offer my babies formula even after they are eating on their own. They will stop eating on their own.

Is the motion as if he is begging or is he acting like he is going to....well puke I guess? I've noticed that our young Sun Conure would bob his head as if he wanted to offer me some of his lunch & now I have a little Green Cheek who does the same.

Most babies usually are weaned by 12 weeks but they can possibly need feeding longer. As long as he is eating well & not losing any weight he should be ok. Best of luck!:orange:

Well he will put his head back and bob it really fast if I put my finger on his beak sometimes. I'm assuming this is a begging motion but he does eat on his own.

Btw Rio Mom I like the name June it just doesnt seem to fit the bird tho lol. Wish it was more of a June case I've always liked that name :)

Ahh, you actually grabbing his beak is likely the cause. Parents sort of "hook" their beak on the chicks for feeding. My older Sun Conure (probably 5+ years) will do this bobbing when I stroke his beak :D.

I like to rub his cheeks but that makes sense lol. Should I lay off the cheek rubbing then? I can always just rub under his wings since he likes that lol

Nah, I don't think it hurts them at all. My boy Sunny will do it multiple times because I usually sit and laugh at him.

We adopted a cherry headed conure named rodeo red he is 8 years old...We had a cherry headed conure for over 25 years.. He passed away on February 18, 2011 His name was harry aka chicken
I am sorry that you lost linius. the new bird is beautiful as for the name i like the schroder idea... You do not want to be referred to as linius IT IS NOT LINIUS! My husband and i lost our bird of 25 years back in february. we went to a parrot rescue and got rodeo red ( that was his name when we got him) and my husband sometimes without realizing it refers to rodeo as chicken. and rodeo reminds him that he is NOT the same bird as he favors me and NOT my husband. every bird is different... and your new baby is beautiful.

Thank you so much for your words. I really wanted to get a new name for this new bird because calling him Linius would kinda be like saying he never died. which is not true. It would also be unfair cause then I would hold it to the same standards as I had with Linius. When I really look at it they are so different. With Linius he loved to have his head scratched, the new bird loves his under wings scratched and hates me to touch his head! Also With Linius I had to only hold my hand out to get him out of the cage, this one I have to pick him up to get him up. The differences are small but it is the small details that make the grand picture after-all.

I'm sorry about your loss too. I bet he was such a great friend over the 25 years. I can only imagine the heartbreak you went through. My sincerest condolences. I think it really helps to get another bird to love and help get you out of the mourning process. Red Rodeo is a cute and creative name. Now I wish it wasnt taken lol. I kinda like the names Cisco, Lemon, Bailey and Xander. Although Cisco and Lemon might be just my top two :p

Welcome! I also am a new owner of 2 beautiful GCC's, Jasper (male) and Jade (unknown). My vote for names would be Cisco or Xander (really like this one :) )

Welcome again, and I look forward to hearing about your little one!

How cute He/She is beautiful. Hope U realize what U got yourself into with the sun :):):) Ha,Ha,Ha......Just had 2 put that jab in....They R VERY loving and playful clowns. Our Sun "Caesar" is about 14 months and we got him when he was about 4 months. All of the things that U have mentioned are very normal for baby conure's. The Sun is very beautiful but LOUD :) THATS WHAT THE JAB WAS FOR. LOL
We spoiled our rotten and he is the best little boy. Very very funny and he will bring a smile 2 your face every time. Good luck !

My other sin baby didnt do these actions or noises before he passed (he was killed by a dog when he was in his own cage ) You can follow the story if you look at all my threads. And yea they can get pretty loud lol. Just yesterday Cisco/Xander (not sure yet) blew out my ear with a good one. He had his beak in my ear and everything lol.

Oh my, I can't believe I didn't see this post till now...lol....

Your new baby is adorable!!!! Nobody can replace Linius, but he/she will grab your heart just like Linius did. I'm glad you had the heart to acquire the new baby. As I know from experience how tough it is....But soon this new baby will fill your void and make you happy like you once was with Linius!!! :)
