Mango- Sun Conure
My girlfriend and I purchased out first bird, a 2 year old sun conure. So far it has been a great experience. I found this forum to try and get as much knowledge and advice from experienced bird/conure owners.

He tends to bite occasionally when we try and get him out of his cage or perch. Sometimes he will nip while on your shoulder as well.

We usually use a stick to get him out of the cage, then he steps up without a fuss. Anyone know anyway to break this of him? He has gotten a few painful bites in. lol.

Thanks!

Try training him to WANT to be out of the cage. With mine what I did was use his favorite seeds. I would lure him out with the command "come here Xander" . He learned to come out of his cage and it worked as a double bonus cause he comes when I call him now :)

Ok thanks! He loves Nutter Butter bites.....is it safe to feed him these? I read the harmful foods for conures, and read the ingredients of the nutter butter bites and did not see a problem.

He basically just cracks the nutter butter open, and scrapes the peanut butter creame off the inside.

If it is safe for him to have the occasional nutter butter, I think he would learn to want to come out pretty quickly by being "bribed" lol

You have to be careful of anything that might have any salt content (sodium) Caffeine chocolate alcohol sugar (Sucrose fructose, mostly anything that rhymes with gross) ect.

Most human snacks have sugar and salt, part of the reason they taste so good!

I would advise against feeding him these because they most likely have some stuff in them.

Ingredients: ENRICHED FLOUR (WHEAT FLOUR, NIACIN, REDUCED IRON, THIAMINE MONONITRATE {VITAMIN B1}, RIBOFLAVIN {VITAMIN B2}, FOLIC ACID), SUGAR, PEANUT BUTTER (PEANUTS, CORN SYRUP SOLIDS, HYDROGENATED RAPSEED AND/OR COTTONSEED AND/OR SOYBEAN OILS, SALT), SOYBEAN OIL AND/OR PALM OIL, HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP, GRAHAM FLOUR (WHOLE GRAN WHEAT FLOUR), PARTIALLY HYDROGENATED COTTONSEED OIL, SALT, LEAVENING (BAKING SODA AND/OR CALCIUM PHOSPHATE), CORNSTARCH, SOY LECITHIN (EMULSIFIER), VANILLIN - AN ARTIFICIAL FLAVOR. CONTAINS: WHEAT, PEANUT, SOY.

I dont know just my opinion but I wouldnt feed these to my bird.

You can try other alternative though. Maybe he likes a specific fruit alot or maybe you have birdie treats.

With my birds I try to limit the seeds so that they prize them. I spend 15 mins a day feeding my parakeets millet by hand to tame them because thats the only way they get the millet. Its become very valuable to them when its offered.

With my sun conure, Xander, I feed seeds when training then at the end he gets some in his bowl. Seeds should be fed in moderation anyways so this is kinda my own personal way of making sure its balanced for my birds. Then they mostly eat pellets and fruits.

Wait I just replied to a post of you considering another bird??
A senagel or amazons. If your this fresh in parrot care. An amazon should be for sure ruled out.
I'm sorry if I can about rude. But I love amazons and respect the breed tons.
Not saying your not capable. Cause you probably are. Just please don't.
Wait a year maybe 2. Then concider it.

Yea, until researching it I didn't realize the care they take. For now I will stick with the conures until I get more experience.

Congrats on the new babe! Another thing to try (used something like this for potty training) is to say "OUCH!" and make sure your upset expression is very clear, my female tends to "read" my face. Hope this helps :)
