So I pulled my final 2 chicks from the nest just a few days ago and noticed immediately that my youngest chick looked a little strange. His beak is barely curved outwards at the end. Parents were always given fresh seed, berries, eggs, & other available fruit. Cuttlebone was consumed by the female before she laid eggs.

My chick is about 3-4 weeks old. I have only handfed him these last few days. All other chicks born have perfectly shaped beaks. Does anyone have any experience with chicks like this? Is it possible he will "outgrow" this as he is so young? Other than the beak issue, he seems perfectly happy & healthy!

I've read that it is possible that the curved beak can be caused by the handfeeder, but I KNOW that he came from the nest this way. I was taught by an experienced handfeeder & have raised Cockatiels, Sun Conure, and other Green Cheeks. Is there a different method or tool that could help with this chick?

Hatch date of April 8th.

No, never had a reason to test before. I have had the parents since they were babies (a few years ago). Parents are normal, my other birds are normal. Just this chick has the beak issue.

A slight touch of scissor beak. You can try to repair it. It looks like some pressure may have beed applied to the beak either caused by sibblings or parent pushing him against the nestbox or laying on the poor little fellow when his beak was very soft.

Look at the link.

Crooked or Scissors Beak, or Lateral Beak Deviation: Causes, Symptoms and Treatment Options as well as Prevention

I have hand-reared a couple of birds for another breeder on the odd occasion & with a mild case like your little fellows it will be not be so noticable as the bird gets older. There are many reasons for the cause & no one really knows. My way of thinking is if it only happens once thats OK but if it happens with each clutch then you will have to look into it as it maybe genetic.

By looking at the pic I agree with Pedro. I thought it was totally out of shape or something...lol

It gives him character. He's so cute.

But I understand wanting to find the cause. I hope Pedro is right and it isnanything to worry about. My little Grey had constricted toes as a chick and lost the BA k toes on each foot. She's perfeeand I wouldn't change her for anything.

Yea, I'm hoping that this is the ONLY time this happens.....I really like this chick, always is chirping happily. Earlier feeding he was clucking away even with the syringe in his mouth (haha) despite my scolding him about not eating with his mouth full. An extra happy baby :D

Also hoping that this is not genetic. Parents are not related & did a great job feeding. They are now on "vacation" and I don't plan on another nest until next winter. I was happy to discover that it looks like I will have Pineapples & Cinnamons in this bunch :rainbow1:
