Afraid of nestbox?

I put in a nestbox about 3 months ago to let my sun conures get used to. They'll crawl and chew on it but will not going inside. I know sun conures are more likely to breed at two years but I've also research that there are pairs that produced their first clutch at one year old. Will they eventually make their way inside to explore? Thanks ahead of time

You could try to put treats in the box

Re: Afraid of nestbox?

I could. I don't want to force it though. I just thought that they would have at least explored it by now.

Re: Afraid of nestbox?

You should not rush, when they are ready they would. Why would you push them to mate anyway? I prefer my birds wouldn't.... the only reason why I even bought a nest box is because mine would lay on the bottom of the cage no matter what and becomes very hateful with any birds that goes near in which she lays near by the food dish. So the nest box solved the problem. Some can mature early yes, but its better when they mature a little more before allowing them to breed. Do you even understand the first thing about breeding? To me there's plenty of Sun Conures around, I see them in the ads all the time....Think twice before you proceed! Another thing, breeding can cause the birds to be untamed!

Re: Afraid of nestbox?

They're probably not mature enough yet, 3+ years is better for conures. Mine didn't breed till after 3 each.

Is the box small? Is the hole small?

Re: Afraid of nestbox?

I've been doing a lot of thinking about breeding them and I don't mind if they bred today or two years from now. As for why I want to breed them, like others for the experience and joy of them. I know there is a risk of them losing their tameness but I would be working with them as much as possible. I've also found that it's not too uncommon for them to be aggressive when they have chicks and then back to their normal selves when they don't.

The box is at least 12 by 12 and the hole is a decent size. They could easily make it bigger by chewing if need be. (as they already have)

Re: Afraid of nestbox?

It's highly unlikely that they are afraid of their nest box. My suns sleep in their box every night. Hide in it through the day if they are frightened by a hawk or something. But normally don't enter the box much at all through the day until they are of breeding age or wanting to breed then there is a lot of entering the box & scratching around getting it ready.

I would say that your pair are not ready for breeding just yet.

My suns start to breed at 18 months to 2 years.

Re: Afraid of nestbox?

Thanks everyone for the input. Even if they're not ready to breed yet I think I'm going to leave it in their cage. I'll replace it if it's getting warn out or all chewed up. It can at least be a chew toy for them lol. They are allowed out of the cage all day and only sleep in it so it shouldn't take up too much space from them.
