Greenhouse For the Birds

I met someone the other day that makes greenhouses and since I'm a friend of a friend he's willing to have one custom-made for me, half price! :)

I thought it would be really neat to have! The birds would be able to stretch their wings in the wings in the winter, plus will be able to grow some fruit trees for the birds. In my old home, we had a tennis court with a roof as an outdoor aviary but the birds couldn't use it in the winter.

Q1: Does anyone have a greenhouse as an aviary?
Q2: Does anyone have fruit/nut trees for their birds? What kind?

Oops... not a DIY project. How can I move the thread?

Would a greenhouse be too hot for your birds? It would probably need good ventilation. I have lemon trees, I've had them longer than merlin but he seems to like the smell when they bloom. Not such a good perch tree, they have large thrones. I bet the birds would love to have a place to free fly.

I do have two cats -Riply & Nano bites-
four snakes- china, dip & stick, and Grand Chahee-
depends on the ventilation, ive been in a few green houses that had free flying birds (mostly budgies) but they would stay in the warmer spot of the green house, all the vents were covered in wire mesh and there was a stove set in the corner to heat the place at night.

You would of course have to use safe plants in the greenhouse. How do you clean up after the birds in a greenhouse?

There's a Cockatoo and several finches at a famous greenhouse around Toronto. Like you said it would need good ventilation; we're planning on putting strong mesh over the vents.

Exactly. I will be only using it to stretch their wings in a safe environment, so no need for a stove at night.

It won't be very big, just enough for a Macaw to spread out it's wings comfortably in all directions. I'm planning on putting a disposable sheet (similar to puppy pads) on the floor.

We're in the process of making blue prints. The plants will be on hanging (?) benches on the sides of the greenhouse, so that any obstacles will get in the way of the sheet.

Hard to explain... I'll take pictures once it's done so that it makes more sense.

good luck, Ive always wanted a big green house, and still may do it in a warmer area of the state. as part house, part green house, though Id have to do the whole sliding glass door thing, for when it gets too cold.

I have wanted a greenhouse forever. Combining a grow room & bird aviary sounds great. I bet some of the zoos could give you pointers on safe beautiful plants. There are articles but I've seen conflicting info on some of them, if there is a conflict, I dont fool w/it. Have fun, pictures...

We had a greenhouse up here that had budgies and canaries, greenhouses up here are pretty cold until late April so they had to close the vents early and open them late in the morning. It was a nice green house, but they closed it, kinda sad, the house was at the back of the green house, they had built it onto the house, it was a sweet setup, Id like to have that, open the door and look out to see a garden in the middle of winter.
