I saw someone making foraging toys using hays..are these hays safe for toos? I wanted to try making some different kinds of shreddable toys.

What other things are good to use inside these types of toys?

Thanks!!:white1:

It is safe, but some birds may take it and use it forbearing materials. It's something you have to watch closely to see hue they react with it. Then again, pretty much any material you use in homemade foraging toys, could be used as nesting materials, so it's not just hay. I use shredded paper towels in some of mine.

I always have Timothy hay on hand because we have guinea pigs, so I put it in My TAG and GCC foraging ball and they love pulling it out : )

Thanks Ladies!! As long as I know it's safe I'll make her a toy or two to shred.
In my avatar you see a natural pinata hanging in the background. This morning I shoved a bunch of pine nuts in it to give her something to do. Before I left for work she realized they were there and was already working on it.
This weekend I'll make some things with the cardboard from papertowel rolls. : )

Have a great weekend!
Chris

I use any old boxes that aren't too large. Like the frozen waffles boxes, or the Mac & Cheese boxes, etc. Jello boxes are the perfect size for Loki too, lol. I need to pick up some hay, I don't have any (our tortoise and soon our corn snake, both use aspen pine, which I'm not sure is okay for birds).

Great idea with the jello and mac and cheese boxes, I will have to try those for my two. Also, Aspin is safe to use ....my GCC loves to throw it off her stand ...lol

Ohh..great box ideas!! I'll have to try those too.

Cedar is the thing that you have to be careful about with small animals. I think it's no good for guinea pigs and mice/Snakes. Meaning you can't use it for feeder mice because it will kill the snake. If the mice ingest the cedar or have the oil on their skin.

Pine I believe is ok...but I'd look it up to be safe. There is also something called FiberCore Eco Nest and then there are the paper "litter's" I'm going to check into...we use that for our ferrets.

We use Aspin for the Guinea pigs, hamsters and birds . you can get 8 cubic ft. off amazon for $21.00 with free shipping on prime memberships. I go through a lot of it here and that is the cheapest I have found it . I tried the care fresh bedding but my GCC looked like she was eating it and I was afraid she would ingest to much so I switched to Aspin for her too.

Just wanted to jump in here and say wood shavings aren't good for guinea pigs because of the dust. Check out fleece bedding. It'll save you lots of money, pretties up your cages, is better for the piggies, and you won't have wood shavings all over the house.
