Hi we are planning an outdoor aviary for the feathered babes to frolick in during the day. We have to do "adjoining" rooms though to keep the budgies safe. What I would like to know is this? Should I put double mesh between the border of the IRNs flightcage and that of the budgies, plus I will obviously predator proof the aviary and provide obvious things like shaded areas as well as shelter from the rain. Now the big question: what potted plants can I put in for them to demolish without being poisoned and should I provide extra hiding spots in case they feel threatened by something? I wanna create a safe haven for them to frolick in that makes them feel they've died and gone to birdie heaven! As well as being visually appealing. Also I'm thinking of adding a birdie bath, should I do a shallow pond type thing or a movable one that will be easier to keep clean? Any ideas welcome

Here are some ideas for plants:
Gardenias (bird safe & they smell heavenly)
African Violets
Ferns
Bougainvillea
....there are SO many safe plants, this is just on top of my head :)

I personally wouldn't do a pond like setting because it will be difficult to keep it clean if you have birds flying around, defecating into it.

Good luck with your project. And please post pics along the way. :)

hey, I have a large sunroom type deal on my backyard porch and i want to turn it into a aviary cuz its pretty big. probably 15'by10' and 9ft tall so its perfect for my macaw and cockatiels. But I want some ideas about putting up perches and plants. I made a perch out of crepe myrtle that he currently uses indoors but i want to make something large for the birds so they can fly around...any ideas and pics?

You could easily build something out of PVC if you wish. Here's a link to a DIY stand which included food cups.

I like that camera stand..seems pretty easy and its great if you take the bird to the park. :)

here are some pics of what I have to work with. I will try to put a few stands in there so they can fly around. The paint is wet right now so once it dries ill take my birds out there and take some pics

Pwr wrx, are you that skate boarding guy? I recognize your back yard. Your outdoor aviary deck is supreme. You need to build out, though, so your birds can get direct sun.

My free flying cockatoo has chewed on everything imaginable, he still lives, has never been sick, to my knowledge. I think birds innately know what is toxic to them.

If that were true, then birds should also know what is healthy for them, but that is not the case, especially with so many birds refusing to eat healthy foods.

What about hanging natural perches with robe or stainless steel links?

Thanks for all the ideas, we have decided to go with a 3mtr by 4 mtr by 2 mtr height for the aviary. And am gonna be using natural wood branches in different sizes as perches, plants I've decided on ferns, I'm going to put a flower box in as well to germinate some of the seeds they like so they can have fresh sprouts, perhaps a little chillie tree for the IRN's, and then an indigenous plant we have here called hotnotsvy, that has medicinal properties and keeps all types of illness at bay. Well its gonna take a while to build and get to my liking, will post pics once its done. In no rush as they have large cages inside and I want it to be perfect and cat proof! Lol.
