I made a toy out of a toilet paper tube, cut in half, sewed one end shut, put a few sunflower seeds in, then half a screwed up tissue, then an almond, then sewed the other end shut. I hung them on a piece of ribbon. It is sewed very tightly with no loose bits. Is this safe?
Will she smell the food inside and know she is supposed to chew it open? Should I cut a few small slashes to make it easier?

this sounds like an awesome toy to me - would love to see pics! and I'm not sure about whether she will smell the food, but once she starts picking at it I'm sure she won't be able to stop and the almond and seeds will be a nice surprise for all her hard work.

Our birds have a very keen sense of smell. As far as being a safe toy it does sound ok. When you say sew together, what did you use to do that. Leather, hemp, cotton or sissel rope are safe but just plain ribbon may end up being chewed. Make sure your bird is not swallowing the ribbon. Toy making is so much fun. You can stuff non bleached coffee filters or use small paper cups to stuff also.
