Last night we hung up Chili's new apple-wood play gym...she has her gigantic grape-wood gym in the living room, but she needed something in our bedroom...she was pretty tired of her boring T-stand.

It didn't take me very long to make this one, because it's actually just one piece/branch...so all I had to do was add the SS hardware so it could hang.

I was so worried that she wouldn't like it for some reason, and this morning when I introduced her to it she was verrrrry skeptical. So I held her while I touched the branches and showed her it was ok....then I put her close enough so she could taste-test it...and after that- it was gimme gimme gimme!!!! It's mine!!

She's been stripping bark for the last 20 minutes- adding her touch to her new stand lol Now I just need to add toys for extra entertainment, but she's pretty content with exploring it how it is. Hahaha

WOW! I love it!

I would love to have one like that for Zilla! Maybe I will begin planning now so when she is allowed more exercise she can have something new and fun!

You might want to keep a close eye on her bark stripping, because when she gets bored, she might try wall redecoration as your walls are calcium based drywall/sheetrock & your play stand looks pretty close to your purple wall.....

How do you bake that? I mean get the bugs out and everything?

What an awesome play gym.

I didn't bake it...there's no way that thing would fit in my oven lol

I power washed the branches a couple times to remove any exterior ickies, and they've been drying in my garage for weeks now, but I'm not too concerned about bugs since the wood came from a healthy/live tree. I know of plenty of other parronts who give their fids live branches without concern.

Thanks Walt, these pictures have a weird perspective, so even though it looks close to the purple wall, it's not really- she won't be able to reach it....but regardless, i do keep an eye on her and my walls- she is a cockatoo after all [emoji6]:p lol

I love it! What did you use to hang it with? I have been looking at play gyms and rope perches I can hang from the ceiling for Buddy. I was looking at t stands and gyms but Canelo could cause and accident and knock it over so I'm thinking suspension. Ravensgrf has a hanging gym, I like them both!

I used uncoated stainless steel cable wire I got at Home Depot, along with SS clamps for the cable ends and SS eye screws to mount it to the ceiling joists.

Is any Apple wood safe? I have an apple tree ;)

As long as it hasn't been sprayed with pesticides or other chemicals, you're good to go [emoji106] We have several apple species on our property, and any of them would work great.

Great job on the suspended gym, Shirre! I'm always struck by how much love and effort you put into making your birds happy.

Btw, I was quite skeptical upon seeing the first pictures because, like you said, the perspective is a little screwy in those images. The tree branch just looked so much smaller than it really was! I was suddenly reminded of that scene from Zoolander with the model school! Hahaha! (Only funny if you've actually seen that movie, I suppose. Lol!)

It's not until the pics with Chili that you get an idea of its true size! Haha! Yeah, my d'uh moment of the day.

My goodness! Can I please put you in my pocket and pull you out whenever I require creative ideas for my birds? I'm seriously glad Shiko and Avery don't read these forums... they'd be incredibly jealous and probably peck at me for days for not providing them with the some wonderful luxuries that Chili has :p What a lucky birdy and a great birdy mommy! :)

If you live where the city/county sprays for mosquitoes, you'll want to strip off any bark before assembling & mounting.....that pesticide will be topical & should not affect wood under the bark.....
