I found a good source for untreated Manila rope, 3/4 inch. I want to use this instead of cotton rope for a bong. Yes, still washing it, the wash helped make it a bit softer too.
From what I have read this is a type of hemp rope, thus, bird safe?

My understanding is that even though hemp rope is an alias for Manila rope, true hemp rope is made from the hemp plant, whereas Manila is made from the abaca plant.

Manila rope is often treated when it's made, so unless you find untreated/natural/oil free Manila rope I suggest you not use it- edit: I just remembered you said it was untreated...so go ahead.

Just curious- why are you washing the rope?

Don't know what/where yo did your reading, but true Manila rope is not from a hemp fibre, rather, it's from an abacΓ‘ plant and is favored for ships ropes & hawsers because salt water does not affect them...and...its name of Manila rope was from it originally being shipped from Manila.....

As long as the rope is untreated, abacΓ‘ fibers are safe.....

Being careful, zero smell, but as a side benifit, washing seems to make the rope softer. Was going to go the cotton rope route, but got really concerned over what I found warning about the fibers from the cotton. My wife's GCC has his cotton bong all pilled. I pulled it out of his cage and want to make a safer replacement.

You are correct, what I read did say it was not a true hemp product, but many sources classified it as so, incorrectly.
