Well it's going to be more like a giant cage than an aviary.. but that aside, what kind of mesh or fencing can i use for an aviary that a conure (and maybe a hahn's macaw) would not be able to go through that would also be safe for them?

eta: i should add that stainless hardward cloth is... expensive. lol. several sites suggest regular galvanized but isn't that unsafe?

eta2: nevermind I was unaware that chicken wire comes in a smaller gauge.. will be looking into it :)

eta3: crap I am seeing that most chicken wire is galvanized... help! I am finding that most people use galvanized successfully and it works for chickens...?

GAW...galvanized after welding is the only safe wire..I researched the hell out the "proper wire" and this is what a lot of the bird rescue people use,,not cheap and I had to buy a 100' foot roll..I have 48" left..hint,hint..this wire and a PVC frame and SS screws made a nice aviary for my GW...or as Jerseywendy said...Holy Mac Aviary...

This thread talks about how you can make galvanized wire safer :) I'm probably going to use zip ties.. he will probably not chew on the corners much and I can do a safety check frequently and repair when he does.I have zip ties on his play stand though and he hasn't bothered them yet.

Any advice for building a door? That's the only part I'm stuck on.

Chicken wire has too larger a mesh size (1" hex) for a conure. he will get his head/neck stuck and hurt/kill himself. A mesh size of 1/2 x 1" is a good size. Cheap galvanized wire will kill your bird. Spend the money for "cage wire" , a better grade of GAW. I would think a PVC frame would be fine for a conure,,,BUT remember the cage is as much about protecting him from the outside predators/hazards as it is about keeping him in. Doors are no big deal , just use the same type framing as the body of the pen.Are you able to transport him to the outside pen with a harness or travel cage??? something to think about.
