Vet wrap

My vet wrap gets sticky. I quit using it because it gets gross on my hands I can only imagine what it is doing to the feet of my flock. What do you all do to make it not sticky?

I hear you on that. I've tried washing it, but that made it worse. I now replace it as needed. I know...not very thrifty. :32:

Keep it as dry as you can and replace as needed. My grey hates vet wrap so I pretty much use it as a poop catcher on her boing lol. Sisal twine works great too if you're using it to create a better grip.

That's why I switched to gorilla tape, which holds up well, and cleans great, but mine aren't interested in chewing that stuff.

Gorilla tape doesn't get sticky...or it takes longer to get sticky. I've heard you mentioned it several times but since I was having problems with the vet wrap I didn't go out and purchase any.

NO. It's not like vet wrap.

It's essentially a cloth duct tape. The problem others on the board have reported is that some birds chew the coating off of it, and you're left with patches of adhesive. (I haven't had that problem.)

Another solution is to get the same sort of cloth athletic tape they use to tape say football players ankles for support.

OH ME ME ME!! I know!! Pick me teach!! *waves hand frantically*

Acetone! Saw it on a vet show when a cockatiel came in after flying into a hanging fly trap and getting the gooeyness all over it. The vet said they use it on vet bandages and thought it would help with the fly trap...it worked nicely. Getcha a nice bottle of nail polish remover.

Hell if I know. I can only guess with my rudimentary chemistry background that the acetone, much like isopropyl alcohol, evaporates quickly (which is why it is cold to the touch), and leaves not much residue behind. Especially if you wash the bird afterwards.

Won't the acetone dissolve the vet wrap??? Know what....I've got plenty of that stuff, AND nail polish remover. I think I'll dirty some up and then do some experimenting.

I would think two things would happen. One it would dissolve the adhesive the bandage was soaked in to make it stick to itself, and two, the bandage would absorb the acetone like a sponge, and that can not be a healthy thing for a bird to chew on.

It's not the price that I'm concerned about. It's the stickiness that comes along after a few weeks of being on the stand or perch.

So I may have slightly read too quickly and missed the point. The acetone will get rid of the stickiness when you're ready to wash hands or remove them from the bird. Probably not a good idea to use it while the bandage is still being used.

Ya, I just ended my little 'experiment' (in the garage) cause I couldn't take the smell any longer. The vet wrap seems to have gotten weaker and brittle (the piece I left submerged). The piece I tried spot cleaning is no longer sticky ANYWHERE. Both pieces, despite numerous rinses reek of acetone. Needless to say, I won't be doing this on anything that touches my fids. :32:

I got some wrap at CVS.it has been in use for 4 months and is not sticky but is adhered to the perch well.

(The bird that has his perch wrapped is super clean and neat so I haven't had to change it yet)
