So I began making my own harnesses for my fids back in May. I got the idea from a vest harness from Bird Preferred. So if you are interested in this style harness, please check out their website!

This is ultimately my design in my blog but was based off of there vest style harness. If you have time to make one yourself, it's a fun project for those who like to sew! Here are my posts from my blog as I was creating them. Enjoy!

Odd questions but what kind of temperaments would you use to describe your birds and are they fully flighted (wings not clipped)?
I'm still trying to gauge if my green cheek is too flighty for taking outside on a leash. This isn't helped but his not doing well with an aviator harness; he starts to get agitated and jumps or flies off part way through putting it on and gets tangled in it, dispite this he does great at training to put his head in the loop but the rest is such a traumatic event I feel like the aviator just wont do. Personally I think the head loop size is a touch (by no more than 5mm) too small for him, which doesn't help.

I like the shape of this harness though, almost like a compromise between aviator and a flight suit. Although my only comments are wouldn't a leash be better on the front and wont the velcro deteriorate with time?

That's a very nice harness and creative way to make it your own. She wears it well.:red1:

My birds all have various temperaments. My CAG is the worst when it comes to trying to get a harness on him. I made him one but have yet to try putting it on. I think of all the harnesses out there, this would be the one I could get on him. My birds bark at me, but they really do well once they are on. My B&G is the best with it and doesn't bother with it much at all. My conure & GW macaw both pick at it but the harnesses have held up really really well. This harness is not meant for a flight harness. Only to take them out and about while I hold them. My B&G has flown off my shoulder when spooked with this harness on and it did it's job great! I had her by the leash and she landed gently on the ground. Because this is not meant to be a "flight" harness the leash is better suited in the back. They pick at it a lot less. If it was in the front, they would chew it off for sure! LOL! At the cost of these harnesses, I am not concerned if the Velcro wears down over time. It would be easy enough to put new Velcro on or make a new flight suit. My macaws have worn them a lot and no signs of wear so far. I love that I can make them with any fabric I choose, too! ;)

I hope that helps and good luck!!

Thank you! ;)

Thanks Allee! I do think that this vest style harness is the most comfortable on them yet. With my Coqui plucking, it helps keep her chest warm, too! :D

Looking forward to the new pictures! I wish I could sew:(

You know Terry, my sewing skills are very minimal. LOL! I have a sewing machine and enjoy sewing but have always done easy projects. If it was square and flat I could make it. :p I generally have made simple wall hangings and table runners and that is about it!

But I looked at the harnesses and thought, you know, I bet I could do that! So I looked up a video on how to make a tank tops. Yeah, I know, sounds strange but these vests are kinda like tank tops. When I saw how easy it was on YouTube, no less, I decided to give it a whirl and here we are!

I always find if I really want to do something and if I put my mind to it, I can! You don't know until you give it a try. Mind you I already owned a sewing machine, so if you don't own one that could be an expensive "give it a try" project! :p

Great job! They look great. I love the little froggy ones:)

Have a question, are they a bit bulky in the back or under the wings at all?

It's only a little bulky in the back because of the two straps that have Velcro on them. But really, they are not bad. Because the sides swoop down to the straps there is no excess fabric under the wing. If I can I will get an under the wing shot so you can see at some point! ;)

Great job! I make harnesses for my yorkies, but never for Tsali. He has two Aviator Harnesses and although they work, I am not completely satisfied with them. You have inspired me to put on my thinking cap.
